The English Football League (EFL) Championship team – the Millwall Football Club – and the Lewisham Council have signed a lease deal for the club to remain at their home pitch – The Den in South-East London (UK) – and the surrounding land for the next 999 years.

‘BBC SPORT’ stated that the club say this agreement will enable them to move forward with plans to enhance the matchday experience, expand use of its facilities throughout the year and play a leading role in the local area.

Preston (UK)-based the English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales (UK). Founded in 1888 as the Football League it is the oldest football league in the world and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992 when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League, the highest level of the English football league system. The Football League was rebranded as the ‘English Football League’ (EFL) starting with the 2016-2017 seasons.

The Millwall Football Club is a professional football club in Bermondsey, South East London, England (UK). They compete in the EFL Championship, the second level of English football.

The 20,146-capacity The Den (previously The New Den) is a football stadium in New Cross Gate, South-East London (UK) and the home of the Millwall Football Club.

The Lewisham London Borough Council, also known as the Lewisham Council, is the local authority for the London Borough of Lewisham in Greater London, England (UK). The Council has been under Labour majority control since 2010. It has been led by a directly elected Mayor since 2002.

‘BBC SPORT’ further stated that ‘The Lions’ also claim that the new agreement will allow their community trust to have access to protective space that will help widen its reach.

Millwall reached an agreement in principle with the Council over the above deal in May 2024.

Asserted James Berylson, Chairman, Millwall Football Club, “This is a defining moment for the Millwall Football Club and the Millwall Community Trust. Securing a 999-year lease at The Den gives us the stability and certainty every club needs to build for the long term. So much hard work, time and dedication have gone into reaching this moment. I would like to thank the Mayor of Lewisham (Area in South-East London) Brenda Dacres Order of the British Empire (OBE) and all at the Lewisham Council for their positive and collaborative approach. Together, we have secured an outcome that safeguards our home while supporting the wider interests of the borough.”
