A new football stadium and a concert hall will be built on the ThyssenKrupp Schulte site in Hamburg, Germany.

A design by gmp in collaboration with WES Landscape Architecture was awarded first prize in the competition to design a complex for the site in the Hamburg-Altona district.

Altona long-distance train station is scheduled to be relocated to the site by 2027, and the whole district will undergo a fundamental transformation.

Located directly opposite the planned train station, the 4.7-hectare project site will house a regional league football stadium and a concert hall, each with approximately 5,000 seats.

There will also be office space a daycare center, retail outlets, and restaurants.

Several historic ThyssenKrupp Schulte administrative buildings will be preserved and repurposed.

Regional stadium

The design by gmp consists of four components, the most prominent of which is the new regional league stadium. It will be the home of the traditional Hamburg club Altona 93.

Altonaer FC von 1893, commonly known as Altona 93 and abbreviated to AFC, is a German association football club based in the Altona district of the city of Hamburg.

The club plays in Regionalliga Nord, the fourth tier of the German football league system.

The football team is a department of a larger sports club which also offers handball, karate, table tennis, and volleyball.

gmp added that with lushly landscaped terraces and a brick base, it creates the impression of a playing field in a green setting. Repurposed shipping containers provide space for a museum, restaurants, and restrooms.

This creates an industrial-style atmosphere that allows ample room for the club’s own design and for fans to engage with the space.

An adjacent sports building, whose accessible roof can be used as a sports area, will house further club facilities and sports offerings, such as a climbing wall.

Hamburg Music Hall

The second component is the Hamburg Music Hall – a new concert hall for Hamburg. An existing warehouse will be converted into a concert hall for rock and pop concerts and other events.

An auditorium with approximately 5,000 seats will be integrated into the existing hall as a separate new building. A cultural center is being created that, due to its flexible usability, will be significant for all of Hamburg and contribute to the revitalization of the neighborhood.

As the third component, a building with office and commercial space is being constructed along Waidmannstrasse.

As the westernmost component, it forms a striking contrast to the glass station towers. A brick facade creates a connection to the existing buildings, which are to be preserved. The staggered heights mediate between the station and the surrounding neighborhood.

An open staircase, integrated into the building, leads to an outdoor stage of the concert hall and can be used for spontaneous activities.

The fourth and final component is the historic administration building with two portal houses, which are being preserved and repurposed in accordance with existing building principles.

The administration building offers space for a daycare center with a focus on movement and play, while the two floors above can accommodate co-working spaces and additional office space.

The planning for the entire quarter follows a holistic approach to sustainability. Facade and roof greening, rainwater management, and the resource-efficient use of materials are three key priorities.

This is complemented by the integration of renewable energies, robust building structures, and a judicious use of technical systems.
