Construction work is due to get underway this autumn on a new stadium in the Croatian city of Bjelovar.

Total Croatia said Bjelovar’s football club will be the main beneficiary of the new 3,800-seater stadium, which will be built at a cost of €8 million.

Mayor of Bjelovar, Dario Hrebak, announced that the start of construction work is scheduled for autumn this year.

He is now launching a tender for the development of the main project, while a building permit is also being sought.

The new stadium will meet all of the requirements for play in the Croatian National Football League.

Hrebak said the financing for the project is already in place.

In addition to the construction of the new venue, renovation of the existing Bjelovar City Stadium is also planned as part of a wider investment plan for the area. A new grandstand will be built.

Croatia is known worldwide as a sporting destination, and it is truly incredible how many talented athletes a country so small has produced, Total Croatia said.

And one of the most interesting elements of the stadium project is that it will include Croatia’s first small arms indoor shooting range, which will be located underneath the stands.

This is because Miran Maričić, a resident of Bjelovar, won a bronze medal in the 10-metre air rifle competition at the Paris Olympics. Maričić success contributed to raising of funds for the construction of the arena.

There are also plenty of unusual events related to football and other sport that have put Croatia on the map. Perhaps the most bizarre of all is the football match held at the bottom of a lake in Imotski.

With funding now in place, a tender for the main construction project and building permit will be issued next week.
