Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Morocco opened Image: TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations on Facebook

Rabat’s (Morocco) Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium has finally reopened its doors after a recent renovation made in preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

‘moroccoworldnews.com’ stated that and before the paint even dried a brand-new and even bigger project is already on the horizon to improve the stadium once again.

The Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium is a football stadium in the area of El Youssoufia, Rabat, Morocco. The stadium will have a seating capacity of 22,000. The old stadium was renovated in 2012 and demolished in 2024.

The Africa Cup of Nations, commonly abbreviated as AFCON and officially known as the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations for sponsorship reasons, is the main biennial international Men’s association football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and was first held in 1957.

6th of October City (Egypt)-based the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is the administrative and controlling body for association football, beach soccer and futsal in Africa.

‘moroccoworldnews.com’ further stated that the National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP), which is acting on behalf of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports ,  has just put out an open international tender to give the stadium a complete makeover.

This time around it’s set to bring it up to the world-class standards as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

The chosen contractor in charge of the complete overhaul of the stadium must be especially focused on the stadium’s capacity to withstand any tough weather conditions. In-depth tech research is expected to play a serious role in this construction.

One real standout aspect of the project is the wind tunnel testing on a scale model of the stadium – similar to testing procedures for a Formula 1 (F1) car – complete with 400 pressure sensors. The testing will determine just how much wind the design can take ensuring the stadium’s rigor.

The safety and quality standards will be ultra-tight on this one. The new structure will ensure top safety devices that combine fireproof paint with flame-resistant material for fire prevention. Every single bit of metalwork will undergo a C4-grade anti-corrosion coating that will keep it looking and functioning like new for years to come – even in the toughest environments.

The contractor will be responsible for both the design and the buildout sorting all the technical drawings and assembly plans. The project will also have to adhere to Eurocode (NF-EN) standards and include all the internal checks on the welds, joints and steel to make sure everything is bang-on spec.

The Eurocode (NF-EN) standards are a series of European standards for the structural design of buildings and civil engineering works. They provide a common set of rules for ensuring the structures are safe, serviceable and durable and cover a wide range of materials like concrete, steel, timber, and masonry.

The new structure is going to be built from top-quality S355 high-strength steel – and that’s all included in the price. There’s a 10-year guarantee against corrosion with expectation for the structure to easily last more than 25 years.

This new investment supports Morocco’s long-term goal of developing modern sports facilities and furthering its global aspirations in football.

As per the official documents, the whole project is estimated to amount to a whopping 20 billion centimes, or MAD 209.7 million ($22.65 million). The new upgrade will focus on the stadium’s structure, metalwork and the entire essential infrastructure.

Internal networks and finishes will also be integrated to support the venue in achieving the highest international standards for safety, comfort and playing surfaces.
