The Belgian professional football club – Standard Liege – have been given the green light to expand their stadium capacity – Stade Maurice Dufrasne – from 28,700 to 32,000.

‘Inside World Football’ stated that the Stade Maurice Dufrasne boasts steep stands which are not at all fan-friendly. The stadium will now be totally reconfigured after the Walloon (Belgium) authorities gave the thumbs-up for revamp plans and capacity expansion to proceed.

Standard Liège is a Belgian professional football club based in the City of Liège (Belgium). They are one of the most successful clubs in Belgium, having won the Belgian League at least 10 times, most recently in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009.

The Stade Maurice Dufrasne is a football stadium in Liège, Belgium. The stadium holds 27,670 people. It is also known as Stade de Sclessin, from the name of the district of Liège where it is located, and is the home stadium of Standard Liège.

Stated Walloon Minister for Economy Willy Borsus, “This investment is a quality project skilfully combining sporting, commercial and societal opportunities.”

The ‘Inside World Football’ further stated that last summer, the local town hall had greenlighted the plans before the regional authorities shot them down. Now, since the plans have got the nod, Standard can begin with the redevelopment of their stadium as well as a rise in the venue capacity. The stadium upgrade will also boast a commercial center and entertainment areas.

The stadium was inaugurated in 1909 and hosted three group-stage matches during Euro 2000.
