North Carolina secures 2029 FISU games Image: FISU

The Executive Committee of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) met in Lake Placid (village) in New York (US) on January 10th and January 11th, ahead of the Winter edition of the FISU World University Games which opened on January 12th, also awarding the 2029 FISU University Games Summer.

‘EUSA’ stated that apart of the discussion of current topics and the focus on the ongoing FISU World University Games Lake Placid 2023, the FISU Executive Committee also voted and confirmed the selection of North Carolina, US, as the Host of the 2029 Summer edition of the FISU World University Games.

Lausanne (Switzerland)-based the International University Sports Federation (FISU) is responsible for the organization and governance of worldwide sports competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 25.

The Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games, commonly known as Lake Placid 2023, is a collegiate multisport Winter sports event which got off to a rousing start on January 12th and will continue till to January 22nd, 2023 in Lake Placid, New York, United States.

‘FISU’ stated that the rich heritage and pageantry of amateur sports was on full display during the Opening Ceremony of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games on the iconic ‘Miracle on Ice’ rink made famous during the 1980 Winter Olympics. The 2023 FISU showpiece is being held at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Center is a sports complex in Lake Placid, New York (US) that acted as the Olympic Park for both the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. The venues inside the area are the main complex of the 2023 Winter World University Games.

Governor of New York Kathy Hochul officially opened the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games welcoming 1,443 student-athletes from more than 540 universities and 46 nations who gathered to celebrate the biennial multi-Winter sports event.

‘EUSA’ quoted FISU Acting President Leonz Eder as stating upon the attribution, “We were very impressed with what North Carolina has to offer for the FISU World University Games from our site visits, their candidature dossiers and the presentation to our Executive Committee in conjunction with their original bid for 2027.”

North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall said, “This is a very proud moment in our North Carolina’s history. The FISU World University Games will be the largest event ever hosted in our State, and it will give us the unique opportunity to not only host athletes and fans from more than 150 countries, but to showcase North Carolina, including our renowned universities and all that our great State has to offer, to a worldwide audience of more than 400 million!”

Hill Carrow, Chairman and head honcho of the North Carolina Bid Committee, stated, “The award of the 2029 FISU World University Games to our State and country (US) is the culmination of an extensive five-year effort by more than 1,000 individuals, 13 universities, five Cities, five counties, the State of North Carolina, and 53 corporate and organizational sponsors to land this amazing event.”

North Carolina’s bid to host the FISU World University Games is centered in Central North Carolina, in a region stretching from Raleigh to Greensboro, encompassing the Triangle and Triad areas of the State. The region has been branded as North Carolina’s University Hub. The United States has hosted so far the Summer edition of the FISU World University Games (previously known as Universiades) in Buffalo, New York in 1993, while Lake Placid, New York, hosted the Winter editions in 1972, and is hosting them now in 2023.

‘FISU’ further stated that this is the first time the FISU World University Games have been held in the United States in 51 years. Lake Placid was previously host in 1972.

Added Eder, “Even though North Carolina was not successful with its bid for the 2027 FISU Games last Autumn, we have worked diligently with our membership and staff since then, on the best way to secure North Carolina, US, as a future host of the FISU World University Games. It is important for our National University Sports Federations that we offer as much certainty for them as possible for the future and we’re grateful for this opportunity to do so.”

Remarked Elaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State, “This is a very proud moment in our North Carolina’s history. The FISU World University Games will be the largest event ever hosted in our State, and it will give us the unique opportunity to not only host athletes and fans from more than 150 countries, but to showcase North Carolina, including our renowned universities and all that our great State has to offer, to a worldwide audience of more than 400 million!”

North Carolina joins a prestigious roster of future hosts: Chengdu (China) later this year, Rhein-Ruhr (Germany) in 2025 and Chungcheong Megacity (Korea) in 2027.

The XXXI Summer World University Games are set to be held from July 28th to August 8th, 2023 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China.

On behalf of the United States International University Sports Federation (USIUSF), the US Member of FISU, Dan Guerrero, USIUSF President, put in, “This is a great milestone in university sports history in the United States. Building off the excitement of the FISU World University Games Winter that started in Lake Placid, the 2029 FISU World University Games Summer in North Carolina will take the presence and awareness of international university sports in the United States of America, the number one market in the world for collegiate sports, to the next level!”

North Carolina’s bid to host the FISU World University Games is centered in Central North Carolina, in a region stretching from Raleigh to Greensboro, encompassing the Triangle and Triad areas of the State. The region includes 19 colleges and universities with more than 250,000 university students and has been branded as North Carolina’s University Hub.
