The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season kicked off recently with the Portland Thorns FC looking to defend their title and the top-flight American division eager to avail on the momentum ahead of the forthcoming Women’s World Cup.

‘as’ stated that NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman expects 25 percent-30 percent of the league’s players to travel to the Women’s World Cup which starts on July 20th through to August 20th in Australia and New Zealand.

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is a professional women’s soccer league at the top of the United States league system. It is owned by the teams and, until 2020, was under a management contract with the United States Soccer Federation.

Chicago (US)-based The United States Soccer Federation, commonly referred to as U.S. Soccer, is a 501 nonprofit organization and the official governing body of the sport of soccer in the United States.

The Portland Thorns FC is an American professional women’s soccer team based in Portland, Oregon, US. Established in 2012, the team began play in 2013 in the then-eight-team National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), which receives support from the United States Soccer Federation.

The 25,218-capacity Providence Park is an outdoor soccer venue located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, US. It serves as the residence of the Portland Thorns FC.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup™ will be the ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™, the quadrennial international women’s association football championship contested by the women’s national teams and organized by FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, and is scheduled to take place from July 20th to August 20th, 2023.

Berman told newsmen, “There will be promotion and messaging around making sure that both domestically and internationally for the players – who we know have very strong followings, who are going to be competing on an international stage at the Women’s World Cup,”

‘as’ further stated that the timing is ideal for the league, which is looking to move forward after damning revelations of widespread abuse and misconduct that cast a shadow over its 10th anniversary season last year.

It marked a dark chapter for a league that has been on an otherwise positive curve, attracting thousands of new fans since the United States women’s national soccer team (USWNT) secured their fourth World Cup title in 2019.

The United States women’s national soccer team (USWNT) represents the United States in international women’s soccer. The team is the most successful in international women’s soccer, winning four Women’s World Cup titles (1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019), four Olympic gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008, and 2012) and nine Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) Gold Cups.

Opening Weekend Bonanza

Over 90,000 fans attended a National Women’s Soccer League game during the opening weekend, and helped the league shatter its opening-week record with an average of just over 15,000 spectators for the six games beating the previous yardstick of 10,150 set last season.

The two new Southern California teams (San Diego Wave and Angel City FC) have been instrumental in boosting a new stronger 12-team league with 30,854 fans in San Diego for the 3-2 win over Chicago Red Stars at the 35,000-capacity Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

Angel City’s home defeat to Gotham FC was watched by a capacity crowd at the BMO Stadium as 22,000 packed into the stands in Los Angeles.
