The City of Palermo and Palermo FC have signed a new agreement to extend the team’s stay at the Renzo Barbera Stadium on the Italian island of Sicily.

Palermo FC said the deal lays the groundwork for a long-term framework that could last up to 99 years.

The renewed agreement allows for the future signing of a multi-decade concession, subject to the submission and approval of a detailed technical and financial feasibility plan by the municipality.

Stadio Renzo Barbera (commonly known as La Favorita) is a football stadium in Palermo, Italy. It is currently the home stadium of Palermo FC. The stadium was inaugurated during the fascist era on 24 January 1932.

Palermo Football Club is an Italian professional football club based in Palermo, Sicily, that currently plays in Serie B. It is part of the City Football Group.

Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla emphasized the strategic value of the extension to continue ongoing upgrade works at the Renzo Barbera Stadium and support Palermo’s potential bid for Euro 2032.

He said, “This is a decisive step toward projecting the Barbera into the future. Our cooperation with a strong partner like City Football Group can bring not only sporting success to the club but also long-term social and economic benefits for the city.”

The municipality has already allocated €3 million for the stadium renovations, in partnership with Palermo FC.

Palermo FC CEO Giovanni Gardini echoed the mayor’s optimism. He said, “This step carries strong symbolic value. We are working on a project that envisions a modern, sustainable, and community-integrated stadium.

“With today’s agreement, the Renzo Barbera Stadium enters a new chapter—one aimed at long-term stability and international ambition. Today’s move, beyond its immediate practical effects, also has enormous symbolic value for the institutions, the club and the entire city.

“It is proof that there is a desire on all sides to raise the profile of this wonderful city through structural interventions capable of projecting an entire community to levels of excellence, in step with modernity.

“Always with a view to providing citizens – not just fans – with the functional and efficient services they deserve. We are already working to present a feasibility study as soon as possible that will outline a vision for a modern, sustainable, welcoming stadium that is integrated into the urban identity.

“The new Barbera will be all this and much more. And by working as a team also off the pitch, as demonstrated in discussions with the Municipality of Palermo over the last few years, we are confident that we will get there together”.
