Accor Arena will host more sumo events Image: Coliseum GSVA

Sumo, the famous Japanese wrestling sport, returns to France after an absence of over 30 years!

‘SORTIRAPARIS.COM’ stated that the Accor Arena in Paris, France, will host the Paris Sumo Tournament from June 13th-14th, 2026. The event will provide an opportunity to discover some of the best first-division Sumo wrestlers in the capital and to learn more about this age-old tradition truly rooted in Japanese history.

The 20,300-capacity Accor Arena, also known as the Bercy Arena, is an indoor sports arena and concert hall in the neighborhood of Bercy on the Boulevard de Bercy in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, France. The closest Métro Station is Bercy which also serves the Finance Ministry.

‘SORTIRAPARIS.COM’ further stated that it’s a sport far removed from anything we know. Yet, Sumo fascinates and arouses the curiosity of many as much for its rules as for the traditional rituals surrounding the fights. Extremely popular in its native Japan, Sumo is set to travel to France in 2026. To mark the centenary of the Japan Sumo Association, France will host – for the first time in over 30 years – a tournament dedicated to this wrestling sport. To be held on June 13th and June 14th, 2026 at the Accor Arena in Paris, the Paris Sumo Tournament will be an opportunity for the spectators not only to discover the sport but also to immerse themselves in this age-old tradition.

For the Paris Sumo Tournament, the Accor Arena will open its doors to the famous rikishi, the professional sumo wrestlers (first division).

Sumo is a form of competitive full-contact wrestling where a rikishi (wrestler) attempts to force his opponent out of a circular ring (dohyō) or into touching the ground with any body part other than the soles of his feet (usually by throwing, shoving or pushing him down).

As well as the sporting spectacle, the spectators will also be able to immerse themselves in Japanese culture. Sacred ceremonies are also planned. The exclusive organisation of the Paris Sumo Tournament promises the spectators a plunge into the history of this sport with the discovery of several emblematic traditions.

The last Sumo Tournament to be held in Paris dates back to 1995. That year, France hosted – under the aegis of President Jacques Chirac, a great admirer of Sumo – a historic tournament. Another tournament had already been held in France in 1986.

The Paris Sumo Tournament, scheduled for 2026 at the Accor Arena, will mark the return of this wrestling sport to France and further bolster the beautiful friendship that unites France and Japan.

The tickets are not yet available. There’s no doubt that this sporting and cultural event will attract many fans and curious onlookers to the French capital!
