The design studio Sordo Madaleno and the Mexican sports management company Orlegi Sports recently presented the proposal for the refurbishment and remodeling of the El Molinón Stadium in Gijón, Spain, home of the LaLiga 2 team Real Sporting de Gijón.

‘SORDO MADALENO’ stated that this new sports hub will encompass approximately 8.8 hectares of public space connected to the City of Gijón, offering a high-quality environment that would bring to fore its significant historical importance.

Sordo Madaleno is an interdisciplinary architecture, urban and interior design firm with 85 years of experience. Based in Mexico City (Mexico) and London (UK), it is dedicated to excellence in design with a sustainable approach to community development.

Mexico City (Mexico)-based Orlegi Sports is a Mexican sports management company that owns and operates the professional soccer clubs. It was founded in 2013 by Alejandro Irarragorri, who is considered one of Mexico’s brightest businessmen and entrepreneurs.

The 30,000-capacity El Molinón Stadium, officially the Estadio Municipal El Molinón-Enrique Castro ‘Quini’, is an association football stadium in Gijón, Asturias, Spain. The stadium is the home ground of the Real Sporting de Gijón.

Real Sporting de Gijón or simply Sporting is a Spanish football club from Gijón, Principality of Asturias Spain. Founded on July 1st, 1905, it plays in LaLiga 2, the men’s second professional association football division of the Spanish football league system. The El Molinón Stadium serves as their residence.

‘SORDO MADALENO’ further stated that the main objective behind the revamping of the Molinón Stadium is to renovate and enhance the existing sports infrastructure.

The project has maintained the original pitch’s location and has retained over 28,000 sqm of the initially built structure and the number of seats for the Real Sporting fans.

“Our close collaboration with Real Sporting de Gijón is about rethinking stadium design in a way that makes for a truly public place for everyone in Gijón to appreciate. It’s about connecting with the Asturias and its people through an inclusive approach to architecture and ensuring that El Molinón thrives beyond 2030.”

Maintained Fernando Sordo Madaleno de Haro, Partner, Sordo Madaleno, “We have designed a series of semi-open spaces with a welcoming façade that seamlessly integrates the new and old elements of the building with its Cityscape, providing vistas over Isabel La Católica Park and the San Lorenzo Beach. These open-air circulation ramps that weave around the El Molinón Stadium create a visually distinct structure that emphasizes the role that fans of the Real Sporting de GijónLa Mareona – play in defining the stadium’s identity as they move around it. The overall effect makes for a compelling and visually striking landmark for the region.”

The El Molinón Stadium has integrated 12,600 sqm of space dedicated to a gastronomic corridor, restaurants, shops, and cultural activities. This dimension will support the region’s cultural profile and establish El Molinón as a year-round public destination that is accessible to both residents and visitors.
