The C.F. Møller Architects, in collaboration with Elding Oscarson Arkitekter (an architectural practice based in Stockholm, Sweden) and DIFK (design-led structural engineering company), has won the architectural competition for a new stadium in Malmö, Sweden.

The winning design recipe – a building which unites everyday sports activities, international competitions and urban life in a single architectural gesture.

A ‘LinkedIn Post By Jan ÅströmJan Åström’ stated, “The architectural competition has been decided – C.F. Møller Architects, Elding Oscarson and DFIK will design Malmö’s new stadium. Four international architectural teams participated in the competition to design an accessible, inviting and sustainable stadium for both national and international competitions in athletics and football.”

Maintained Marie Centeno, Chairman of the jury and Section Manager at the Stadsfastigheter (City Properties) in Malmö Stad (City), “The jury thanks all the teams for their solid work and high level of ambition. The entries were consistently of very high quality. The City of Malmö is now looking forward to working together with the winning team and Skanska (construction company) to create a fantastic new stadium for Malmö.”

Added Mårten Leringe, Architect and Partner at C.F. Møller Architects, “This is a stadium for the future – a building that is as much an urban space as a sports facility. We wanted to create a place that embraces both the spectators and the athletes, where sport is at the center but where everyday life can also take place.”

Observed Fredrik Leveen, Project Manager at Skanska.hashtag#malmö, “The winning team has developed an attractive and well-thought-out solution that combines function, form and sustainability. We look forward to further developing the proposal together with the architectural team and the City of Malmö.”

The ‘LinkedIn Post By Jan ÅströmJan Åström’ further stated, “The jury was led by Chairman Marie Centeno from Stadsfastigheter and consisted of Finn Williams and Magdalena Alevrá from the City Planning Office, My Augustsson from Stadsfastigheter, Mikael Thor from the Leisure Administration, Maria Knutsson-Hall from the design firm Populous, Fredrik Leveen and Joel Liedbergius from Skanska and Rita Ochoa from AFL Architects (design studio from Manchester, England, UK).”

The new Malmö Stadion is a planned modern athletics and football stadium to be built in Malmö, Sweden replacing the current Malmö Stadion. It’s expected to be completed by 2028 and will be a facility for international-standard competitions in sports seating up to more than 8,000 spectators under one roof.

The 27,500-capacity Malmö Stadion is a multipurpose stadium in Malmö, Sweden.

Aarhus (Denmark)-based the C.F. Møller Architects is one of Scandinavia’s leading architectural firms with 100 years of award-winning work in the Nordic region and worldwide.

The Skanska AB is a multinational construction and development company based in Sweden. It was established in 1887 as a concrete product manufacturer.

Architectural Approach

‘CF MØLLER ARCHITECTS’ stated that the winning design features a transparent, sculptural and climate-friendly building that unites everyday sports activities, international competitions and urban life in a single architectural gesture.

The stadium is designed as a low, light super-ellipse with a transparent, vibrant façade of pale ceramic louvres that references other buildings in the area. The ground floor showcases stories of records and sporting achievements that have taken place at the stadium site. The building opens itself to its surroundings connecting the various urban spaces, the pedestrian paths and the parks while enclosing a unique stadium space where the spectators surround the field – a format that creates proximity, intensity and community.

‘CF MØLLER ARCHITECTS’ further stated that the facility is designed to accommodate approximately 8,200 spectators with the potential for expansion to accommodate larger events. Its everyday value is equally important: The foyers are used by the sports clubs, the schools, martial arts, spontaneous sports activities, running tracks, and public spaces that remain active year-round.

Observed Jonas Elding, Architect, Elding Oscarson, “The new stadium, like the old one, is white and has a flowing form. It should be easily recognizable, a sculptural icon in the City but equally important is creating human-scale spaces when approached up close.”

The architectural approach is both climate-friendly and flexible. The structure combines concrete and timber, façade elements are reused from the existing stadium, the solar panels are integrated into the roof and the building is designed to minimize energy use and climate impact without compromising on the experience.
