SoFi Stadium roof marvels of technology

The entire look of the newly opened SoFi Stadium (a stadium and entertainment complex) in Inglewood, US, takes one’s breath away. The stadium’s translucent roof, seating bowl, concourses and landscape have been sculpted and designed to give the look and feel of an outdoor venue while providing the flexibility of a traditional domed stadium. And now, the stadium has gone ahead to create another ‘first’ – after the larger-than-life videoboard – with its roof technology which is indeed a signature feature of the spiffy venue.

The scintillating SoFi Stadium went off the ground in September 2020 and serves as the home ground of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League (NFL).

The National Football League is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference.

The facility famously features the ‘Oculus’ – the 120-yard-long video board. Now, another ‘wow’ factor added to the swanky stadium is – TV projection on the roof of the stadium. The roof canopy of SoFi Stadium has been built using a fluorine-based plastic called ETFE – ethylene tetrafluoroethylene – and features the largest cable net system in the world. The translucent roof spans 1 million square feet and a network of LED lights help project images onto the roof, mimicking a vast movie screen that’s visible to both visitors in their seats and airline passengers above the stadium.

SoFi Stadium sits at a stone’s throw away from the Los Angeles International Airport, more popularly known as LAX, and the whole roof tech is a vision for the flight passengers.

Alvin Huang, Professor of Architecture at University of Southern California, told mediapersons, “You will literally have millions of people looking at it from above. The roof not only becomes an architectural signature, it also becomes a branding signature.”

TV projection on the roof is a cutting-edge addition to the resplendent SoFi Stadium which is already dazzling in glory and revered by the NFL fans for its state-of-the-art features.

Very recently, Monday Night Football was presented in a different light as the NFL team Los Angeles Rams broadcasted the game atop of the newly-created SoFi Stadium.

An aerial view caught the game action on Monday night. In the video shared by the Rams, the visual aspects illuminated the stadium from the outside. Onlookers were able to potentially see the game from different angles.

The Rams went on to win the game over NFL team based in Tampa, Florida – Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Due to the pandemic, fans have still not been greeted to the SoFi Stadium fold, yet they got to watch the Rams in action from a special vantage point due to the technological marvel – football broadcast atop the plush facility’s venue.

The Los Angeles Rams tweeted, “Not a bad way to watch Monday Night Football.”

For now, no supporters will be allowed to grace the Rams and Chargers game at the stupendous stadium for the 2020 season as COVID continues to clobber the United States.

Though a lot of NFL fixtures have been lined up to be held in the swanky stadium, nevertheless, it will also play host to other events like WrestleMania slated for March 28th , 2021, the American singer Taylor Swift & Friends show in 2021, and much more. For the WrestleMania, the focus is to have fans in attendance despite the grave pandemic situation.

The league also plans to host the 2022 Super Bowl, the 2023 CFP National Championship game and other events in the near future.

“The opening of the stadium is a significant milestone in Stan Kroenke’s delivery of his commitment to create a world-class sports and entertainment event venue in the heart of Los Angeles,” Jason Gannon, Managing Director, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, told mediapersons.

After all, everything boils down to creating an enchanting guest experience and an exalted fan experience in the long term. The (marvel) lous roof of SoFi Stadium does not cease to amaze and indeed sits like a crown on the stylishly built venue.
