In an engaging discussion with ‘Coliseum’, Michael Conner, Sports Venues Global Market Leader, Solotech, US, talks primarily about audio. He states, “Sounds come a long way. Solotech worked with the 19,600-seat Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, US, which was a terrific project and had great results. The fans probably went to some events where they were sitting down in the front and were just being blown away. Your ears are ready to bleed and then you are in a far section away, you can barely hear what is going on. So, the really amazing thing about designing these facilities is that there is Physics involved.”

Solotech

Montreal (Canada)-based Solotech is the single source for audio, video, lighting, rigging, soft goods, control, and collaboration solutions and services.

Stated Michael Conner, “Solotech works with the Live Performance Venues. We also have a few sports venues. I work primarily in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. We also do esports. And then in addition to that we also do Extended Reality, Theme Parks and so we have a big footprint over there and then also Music Tourists, a few small tourists that were part of audio, video and lighting.”

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Conner shares, “Solotech was involved in a project with the 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London (UK). We did the audio system and the life safety systems. It is interesting. It is really interesting to handle the life safety systems in the venues in the United Kingdom vs. the venues in the United States and then how some other trends are coming to the US and that becomes part of what we are thinking about. It’s amazing when you look at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and you say how do we communicate, how do we put on a show for a venue that large or any of the other venues that we have seen of that size.”

NFL Loudest Stadiums

He mentioned about the loudest stadiums in the league, or in the world – “I think there is two different topics when it comes to that. One is crowd noise – who has the loudest stadium in the National Football League (NFL). One is in Seattle that is really loud and the another one in Kansas City is really loud. And that’s how loud the fans get. When it comes to the NFL home fans it is not just about the excitement but whenever your opposing team is on offense what happens to the home crowd. They get really loud and scream ‘Omaha, Omaha’ and all the other kinds of things. It is a pretty unique experience and it is very similar in the other leagues when it comes to excitement and getting into the game and all those kinds of things.”

Sound Travel

“You know the energy, the adrenaline but in the NFL acoustics matters in two ways. One is when you are doing game presentation, game entertainment you want the fan to be able to understand what’s being said over the Public Address (PA) system. And so, when you have a really light venue that makes it really tough because you have reverberations that goes on the building. So, you hear the signal once and then it bounces off the cluster wall and you hear it again and then it bounces off the medium wall and you hear it again and then it bounces off the far wall and you hear it again and that all comes at different rates to your ears so it’s really hard to distinguish what they are saying. So, in those moments you want great acoustics which Solotech provides and you want great intelligibility but then you also want a really good audience but you do not want to hurt the fan either so you want to have that energy but you don’t want to cause damage to their hearing.”

Wrap-up

Michael Conner wrapped up by stating, “Solotech delivers excellence to the sports venues. We design the best system that we can for your needs. Solotech is passionate about sports, passionate about entertainment and passionate about broadcast.”
