At the final of the English League Cup, a small number of spectators can watch the duel between the Premier League (the highest level of the men’s English football league system) teams Manchester United F.C. and the Newcastle United F.C. in the standing room at the Wembley Stadium in Wembley, London (UK), on February 26th.

‘kicker’ stated that this makes the final in the London football temple the first major final in 35 years in which standing fans are allowed again.

The EFL Cup is the English Football League’s (EFL) main cup competition and involves all 92 Premier League and EFL clubs, culminating in a showpiece final at the Wembley Stadium. The competition is played in a straight knockout format and runs over seven rounds beginning in August.

The Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United, or simply United, is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England (UK). The club competes in the Premier League, the top division of the English football league system. The top-flight home ground is the 74,310-capacity the Old Trafford in Stretford, England.

The Newcastle United Football Club is an English professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, UK. The club competes in the Premier League, the highest level of the English football league system. The club was founded in 1892 by the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. The top-flight home ground is the 52,000-capacity St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England (UK).

The 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium is a football stadium in Wembley, London (UK). It opened in 2007 on the site of the original Wembley Stadium, which was demolished from 2002 to 2003. The stadium hosts major football matches including home matches of the England national football team and the FA Cup Final.

‘kicker’ further stated that the finalists Manchester United and Newcastle will each receive a contingent of 867 tickets, which are located in the new standing area at the Wembley Stadium. These are located directly behind both the gates.

At the beginning of the current season, the English league and its clubs allowed standing again in certain areas under certain conditions – for example, for home and away fans in the stadiums of the EFL Championship teams Cardiff City F.C., Queens Park Rangers F.C., the Premier League teams Chelsea F.C. or Manchester City F.C. Now, this should be the case again with appropriate fall barriers in a larger final.

Originally, following the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, standing room was banned in stadiums in the United Kingdom from the year 1994.
