Authorities in the Portuguese city of Famalicão are searching for a team to take on the design, construction and operation of the future Famalicão Municipal StadiumSports and Business Complex.

Famalicão City Council said the tender procedure, which in addition to the construction of the new stadium will also allow for the revitalization of a central area of the city, were presented by Mayor Mário Passos.

The council last year asked investors and private developers to come forward with proposals for a new stadium to be built on land where the Municipal Stadium and the training ground are currently located.

The development would also include shopping facilities, a municipal multipurpose park and a new underground car park.

Futebol Clube de Famalicão, commonly known as Famalicão, is a Portuguese professional football club from Vila Nova de Famalicão. Founded in 1931, its senior team currently plays in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football.

Since 1952, Famalicão have played their home matches at the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho, which has a 5,307-seat capacity.

The mayor said the area where the Municipal Stadium and the training field currently sit is also the best place for a new stadium.

Interested investors and developers will have a maximum total construction area of around 85,000 square meters at their disposal.

The stadium, which will have four covered stands, should have a minimum built area of 19,900 square meters and a capacity of around 10,000 seats.

This mandatory construction area may be complemented by a set of optional buildings, namely the creation of a business complex for commerce or services and another area designated for parking.

Mário Passos also said that at issue is a concession period of 53 years (three maximum for construction and 50 for exploitation).

The president of FC Famalicão’s SAD, Miguel Ribeiro, did not hide his “optimism” and “enthusiasm” with the model presented.

He said, “I believe that this is a project that could be a reference and replicated around the world because it does not just represent a stadium to play in every 15 days.

“From what was presented here, the stadium and everything that surrounds it can create a new hub for Famalicão, because what is intended is that its entire surroundings have the capacity to be enjoyed seven days a week”.

Enthusiasm also shared by the president of Futebol Clube de Famalicão, José Pina Ferreira. “It’s a project that I’m sure will be viable,” he said.
