Three perish in Algeria stadium disaster

Three people have died after falling from the upper stand of the 5 July 1962 Stadium in Algeria on June 21st just after the final whistle as the local football team MC Alger won the league title, the Health Ministry stated.

‘BBC’ stated that dozens of others were injured when a security barrier collapsed with the fans surging forward to celebrate before falling on to the lower tier of the 5 July 1962 Stadium in Algiers (Algeria), according to the local media.

The 85,000-capacity 5 July 1962 Stadium is a football and athletics stadium located in Algiers, Algeria. The stadium was inaugurated in 1972.

The MC Alger is an Algerian football club based in Algiers (Algeria). The club was founded in 1921 and its colors are red, green and white. Their home ground, the Ali La Pointe Stadium, has a capacity to hold 40,000 spectators. The club is currently playing in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1, the top division of the Algerian football league system. As of the 2023-2024 seasons the MC Alger was the Algerian football club with the highest market value. The market value was €9.68 million.

‘BBC’ further stated that more than 70 people have been treated in three hospitals, the Health Ministry informed adding that most have since been released.

The players and staff from MC Alger have gone to the hospitals to donate blood to the injured.

The stadium was packed for the game that saw MC Alger retain the league title they won last year.

During the match the mood was celebratory with green smoke from flares engulfing the stadium.

Following the tragedy the presentation of the league trophy was postponed.

The Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
