Worker dies during construction of Spotify Camp Nou Stadium

A construction worker has died after an accident while he was carrying out work on the renovation of FC Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou stadium.

AP said that in a short statement Barcelona expressed its condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.

Catalan police said the worker was a 54-year-old man who died from a blow to the head. No more detail on the circumstances was given.

Barcelona started a major overhaul of Spotify Camp Nou, Europe’s largest soccer stadium, in 2023. It returned to playing games at the venue in November, with a limited seating capacity, as construction work continued.

FC Barcelona said in a statement, “FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of the worker who lost his life yesterday in the workplace accident that occurred during the renovation works at Spotify Camp Nou,” said the Catalan club.

“The club wishes to express its deepest condolences and extend its heartfelt support to his family, friends, and colleagues.

“FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta wishes to personally convey his condolences to the family and places himself at their disposal on behalf of the entire club.”

The Camp Nou, officially the Spotify Camp Nou for sponsorship reasons, and often referred to in English as the Nou Camp, is a stadium in Barcelona and the home of the LaLiga club FC Barcelona since its opening in 1957.

It is currently undergoing renovation and with a planned increased seating capacity of 105,000 it will be the largest stadium in terms of seating capacity in Spain and Europe and the second largest association football and the fifth largest overall stadium in the world.

Work at the stadium began in June 2023 and is expected to be completed in early 2028.

The Catalan giants returned to the stadium with a reduced capacity last season.

However, recent reports suggest the club might have to temporarily wave goodbye to their famous old ground once again next year.

The Spanish champions have reportedly asked Barcelona City Council for permission to use the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys – known as the Montjuïc – during the first half of the 2027/28 season.

Barcelona spent two seasons playing at the Montjuïc between 2023/24 and 2024/25, and at the start of this season they fluctuated between there and their training ground – the Johan Cruyff Stadium – before moving back into the Spotify Camp Nou in November.

One of the most complicated stages of the Spotify Camp Nou renovation project is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027.

That phase involves installing the new roof structure over the stadium.

As a result, Barcelona fear they may not be able to host matches at the Camp Nou during the opening months of the 2027/28 campaign.

The proposed roof is set to become one of the standout features of the revamped stadium.

For now, plans are in place to increase the capacity bit by bit, with 80,000 fans expected later this year.
