Two companies – Multiplex and John Holland – have been “identified” and termed “capable” by the NSW Government vis-à-vis taking up the task of building the new Sydney soccer stadium.

Despite infrastructure company Lendlease walking away from the project last month, John Sidoti, NSW Minister for Sport, is confident that the Sydney Football Stadium would open its gates “on time and on budget”, ausleisure.com reported.

Builders Multiplex and John Holland have been invited to participate in the competitive tender process. Minister Sidoti said, “The winning bidder will be announced later this year, following the receipt of stage two planning approval and completion of the tender evaluation.”

Stage one demolition work of the stadium – which is all set to be completed by the end of this year – will still be monitored by Lendlease.
Sidoti also informed that the $810 million ANZ Stadium redevelopment work is almost complete, and the project is now proceeding to community consultation and development application.

He further informed, “The refurbished Stadium Australia will move 46,000 seats up to 25 meters closer to the action to create more atmosphere. Once complete, Stadium Australia will be the biggest rectangular stadium in the country, enabling NSW to host the best events in the world. It also allows us to retain our Olympic legacy, while giving the stadium the refurbishment it needs to be purpose fit for the next 40 years which will see us attract and retain world class events.”

The revamping of ANZ Stadium will start after the 2020 State of Origin and since the Sydney Cricket Ground will hold the 2020 NRL Grand Final, the scenario may be such that the NRL Grand Final could be held in other states – Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and Perth’s Optus Stadium might want to hold the season decider.
