UBS Arena supplier diversity program Image: UBS Arena

The UBS Arena’s (in Elmont, New York, US) goal is to build and maintain an inclusive supplier diversity program that reflects the diversity of the community on which it resides and their guests.

‘UBS Arena’ stated that in partnership with the sports company Oak View Group (OVG), the UBS Arena is creating positive disruptions in sports and entertainment that are visible in all aspects of its operations. Its goal is to be the industry leader in delivering diverse content and shows globally, starting at the ground level. It is committed to ensuring its suppliers reflect the community they serve.

The 17,250-capacity UBS Arena is a multipurpose indoor arena located at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York directly adjacent to the New York City limits (US). Opened in 2021, it is the home of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL), replacing the Nassau Coliseum.

Tom Pistore, President, Commercial Biz Ops, UBS Arena, US, is a Member of Coliseum – Global Sports Venue Alliance.

The OVG Oak View Group, LLC is an American Global Advisory, Development and Investment Company for Sports and Live Entertainment industries. Based in Los Angeles (US), it was formed on November 16th, 2015 by Tim Leiweke and his business partner, Irving Azoff. Leiweke is the company’s head honcho.

UBS Arena’s commitment to diversity and inclusion extends beyond its employment policies to its business practices. Its goal is to build and maintain an inclusive supplier diversity program that provides maximum opportunity for small and diverse businesses to become UBS Arena vendors. By providing local, small and diverse businesses opportunities to work with the UBS Arena, it fosters economic inclusivity and ensures a positive impact is made in the community where it operates. Being proactive and intentional helps the UBS Arena to keep up with the ever-changing live entertainment industry, ensuring its supplier diversity program evolves as the industry does.

Diverse Supplier Criteria

‘UBS Arena’ further stated that a diverse supplier is “a company/trader owned and managed at least 51 percent by a non-White minority, a disabled person or a woman.”

The UBS Arena operators currently recognize a wide range of diverse certifications that include Minority Businesses, Woman, Veterans, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Queer (LGBTQ+), Disabled Persons, and other local City certifications. It understands that in certain instances the Arena may have to use large-scale companies, but will continue to make best efforts to be economically inclusive every time opportunities arise.

Evaluation Process

There are several factors the UBS Arena operators consider when vetting potential suppliers, which may change from market to market. Two areas consistently emphasized are the company’s capacity and key differentiators.

Capacity, based on the size of the company, where in its operations would one be the most likely to succeed. The success of its suppliers is extremely important in live entertainment and sports in order to develop long-lasting partnerships. The UBS Arena operators would never want the suppliers to sacrifice the quality of the products and services being provided to their other clients.

Key differentiators, since diversity fosters innovation and the UBS Arena operators want to know what sets the suppliers apart from their competitors. This includes but is not limited to cost savings, reduction in delivery or setup times, value-added services, product/services quality, and sustainability.
