Wacker Innsbruck plans ‘majestic venue’

The second division Austrian association football club Wacker Innsbruck wants to build a new stadium on the area where their present residence sits – Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck (Austria). The plans for the new venue was revealed at an event held recently not open to the public. The whole concept was presented before club legends and the ‘Black and Green’ is keen on building “Europe’s most modern arena”.

The Austrian Football Second League is the second highest professional division in Austrian football. It was formerly called the First League, from 2002 to 2018. The division currently contains 16 teams, and the champion of the league is promoted to Austrian Bundesliga – the highest-ranking national league club competition in Austrian football.

The Tivoli Stadion Tirol is a multipurpose stadium in Innsbruck, Austria. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of FC Wacker Innsbruck and American football club Swarco Raiders Tirol. The stadium’s capacity was 17,400 when it was built in 2000. Its present capacity stands at 15,200. The arena was the venue for three preliminary round matches during Euro 2008.

The Austrian Daily newspaper ‘Kronen Zeitung’ reported that the new stadium will be a multifunctional one and will be primarily employed for sporting events as well as for concerts. Plans are on to heat the facility with geothermal energy and photovoltaic electricity will be used to run the arena. A Hamburg (Germany)-based investor Matthias Siems has evinced keen interest in the project.

‘Kronen Zeitung’ also reported that the plans were presented by Wacker Innsbruck President Joachim Jamnig and Supervisory Board Chairman Jens Duwe at the above event and they were very upbeat about the whole development and showed a lot of passion for the same.

Apart from an “expansion of spaces”, a total of eight football fields are to be built on the area of the current Tivoli Stadium. It will not be a soccer-specific stadium and other events as mentioned above will be hosted.

But, ‘Kronen Zeitung’ found out that since the Tivoli Stadium does not belong to Wacker Innsbruck but to half of the City of Innsbruck and the State of Tyrol, to integrate eight soccer fields the property will have to be bought or leased by the club. And, if the club wants to avoid purchasing or leasing the property, social housing will have to be a part of the planned project.

More details about the project have not been revealed as yet.
