The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government’s 2026-2027 Budget allocates $15 million to upgrade the GIO Stadium in Canberra (Australia) over the next three years.

‘2cc.net.au’ stated that the funds will target critical maintenance and venue enhancements specifically including the energy-efficient light emitting diode (LED) lighting, the concourse repairs, the lift replacements, and security upgrades.

The 25,011-seat Canberra Stadium, commercially known as the GIO Stadium Canberra, is a facility primarily used for rugby league and rugby union games and is located adjacent to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, the capital of Australia. It is the largest sports venue by capacity in Canberra.

Stopgap Measure

‘2cc.net.au’ further stated that these venue enhancements are part of a broader, four-year package aimed at expanding the ACT’s visitor economy. The other major projects in this budget cycle include the expansion of the Belconnen Basketball Stadium in Belconnen, Australian Capital Territory, and planning for the new National Convention and Entertainment Centre in Canberra, Australia.

While this investment will modernize the current facilities it still remains a stopgap measure. The local teams like the National Rugby League (NRL) team Canberra Raiders and the Super Rugby team ACT Brumbies continue to advocate for a brand-new stadium in the City Center as their home facility – the GIO Stadium – is now 48 years old.

The initiatives include:

  • Upgrading the key venues including the GIO Stadium, the Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) and the 1,950-capacity Canberra Theatre Centre to support better events.
  • Attracting more major events to increase visitation, fill the hotels and boost hospitality and retail;
  • Expanding the Major Event Fund to build a stronger year-round events pipeline;
  • Launching a new destination marketing campaign targeting the key domestic and international markets including India and the United States;
  • Expanding Floriade (Australia’s biggest celebration of spring held annually in the Commonwealth Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra) for its 40th anniversary in 2027 extending the opening hours and encouraging longer stays; and
  • Progressing the city-shaping projects including the new National Convention and Entertainment Centre and the 2,000-seat Lyric Theatre in Sydney opening in 2028.

Sydney (Australia)-based the National Rugby League (NRL) (also known as the NRL Telstra Premiership for sponsorship reasons) is a professional rugby league competition in Oceania which is currently contested by 17 teams from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and New Zealand. A Perth-based expansion team is set to enter the competition in 2027. A Papua New Guinea-based expansion team is set to enter the competition in 2028.

The Super Rugby is a Men’s professional rugby union club competition involving teams from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.
