The Jahnstadion Regensburg in Germany has gone totally cashless. Kiosks at the arena accept payments through credit cards or via smartphones. The parking fees payment has also become a cashless affair.

The 15,210-capacity Jahnstadion Regensburg is a football stadium in Regensburg, Germany. It is the home of the German football club Jahn Regensburg which plays in 2.Bundesliga.

The ‘Jahnstadion Regensburg’ stated that for the first home game of Jahn Regensburg to be played at the arena, visitors cannot pay in cash and will have to make payments in the cashless mode at the kiosks of the arena – either via girocard, Visa, Mastercard or with the help of a smartphone.

The girocard is an interbank network and debit card service connecting virtually all German ATMs and banks. It is based on standards and agreements developed by the German Banking Industry Committee.

Explained Sebastian Graf, Operations Manager, Jahnstadion Regensburg, “Paying in the cashless mode not only simplifies the sales process, but also speeds up the whole payment exercise as the whole business of returning change in the case of cash payment does not arise while paying through cards. This also facilitates the fans to grab their grub or beverage during halftime or just before the game starts and quickly go back to their seats and they do not even have to miss out on the pitch action. Moreover, in a COVID-19 world, contactless payments are safer speaking from the hygiene perspective.”

The ‘Jahnstadion Regensburg’ further stated that in a world clobbered by coronavirus, cash payment has become passé. The top-up card pilot was held but later the whole idea was discarded by the stadium authorities as spectators would again have to again take the trouble of topping up their cards at the stadium terminals and this does not bode well as far as the hygiene concept is concerned.

The cashless system is a joint initiative of Jahn Regensburg along with Das Stadtwerk.Arenen and caterer Regensburg Events.

Parking fees will also have to be paid in the cashless mode and the whole process has been streamlined with the RVV parking app, which can be scanned and downloaded on site using a QR code on the machine. Parking fees on matchdays in the arena now costs five euros – one euro more than last season.

Added Graf, “We had kept the parking fee constant since 2015, but had to finally hike it due to the overall increase in costs.”

The 800 parking spaces for bicycles and motorbikes around the stadium as well as P4 (university) and P5 (university clinic) remains free of charge.
