SC Freiburg new home Europa-Park Stadion

The German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg has signed up amusement park Europa-Park as the naming partner of its new stadium – SC-Stadion which is now Europa-Park Stadion (Germany).

The ‘kicker’ stated that the top-flight club is all set to move to its new digs in mid-October this year.

SC Freiburg is a German football club based in the City of Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It plays in the Bundesliga (top of the German football league system), having been promoted as champions from the 2. Bundesliga in 2016.

SC Freiburg currently plays at the 24,000-seat Schwarzwald-Stadion but is all set to move to the new Europa-Park Stadion, which will enjoy a capacity of 34,000. Freiburg had originally hoped to move to its new ground during the 2020-2021 seasons but this has not been possible due to COVID-19 which had set its evil eye on the project.

The Schwarzwald-Stadion is a football stadium in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is currently the home of Bundesliga team SC Freiburg. The stadium holds 24,000 spectators and was built in 1953. For many years it was called the Dreisamstadion, situated near the River Dreisam.

The 34,700-capacity Europa-Park Stadion is an under-construction football stadium in Freiburg, Germany. It will primarily serve as the new home stadium of SC Freiburg, replacing the club’s former home, the Schwarzwald-Stadion. It is located in a part of the City called Brühl, near the airport.

The Europa-Park is the largest theme park in Germany, and the second most popular theme park in Europe, after Disneyland Paris. The Europa-Park is located in Rust, Southwestern Germany, between Freiburg im Breisgau and Strasbourg.

The ‘kicker’ further stated that if SC Freiburg moves to its new home in October as planned, the stadium at Wolfswinkel will become the ‘Europa-Park Stadion’. The official confirmation regarding the same was given on August 31^st.

The financials of the naming rights deal and the time-frame of the same have not been disclosed.

Throwing a hint, the SC Board Member, Oliver Leki, stated, “It’s a long-term contract, that’s confirmed and will not change every two years.”

Jinxed

First it was the COVID long shadow, and then the top-flight club wanted to move to its new residence in the beginning of the Bundesliga season this year – that is on August 13^th, 2021. But, the same got delayed again due to some technical problems in the new building. SC Freiburg is now keeping its fingers crossed to move to their new home in mid-October this year and wants to play against their peer team RB Leipzig in their new home ground.

Prior to that, SC Freiburg is slated to play a friendly against the 2.Bundesliga team FC St. Pauli during the international break on October 7^th.

The international break is a period of time set aside by FIFA for scheduled international matches per their International Match Calendar.

The 2021-2022 Bundesliga is the 59^th season of the Bundesliga, Germany’s premier football competition. It began on August 13^th, 2021 and will conclude on May 14^th, 2022.
