The much-awaited inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be played from March 4th-26th in Mumbai in the State of Maharashtra in India.

‘Hindustan Times’ stated that the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai and the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai will host all the matches with the tournament opener expected to be played between the Gujarat Giants and the Mumbai Indians-owned franchise.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is an upcoming women’s Twenty20 cricket franchise league in India. It is owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the country’s cricket governing body, is headquartered at the Cricket Centre at the 33,900-capacity Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The BCCI is the richest cricket governing body in the world and is part of the ‘Big Three’ of international cricket, along with Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The 60,000-capacity DY Patil Sports Stadium is a multipurpose sports stadium located in the D.Y. Patil Sports Academy at Nerul in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is a privately-owned arena. It is the home of the D.Y. Patil sports academy. It is primarily a cricket stadium, however, sometimes used for football, music concerts and special events.

The Brabourne Stadium is a cricket ground in Mumbai in Western India, built in the British Bombay era. It was the home ground of the Mumbai men’s and women’s cricket teams. It can accommodate 50,000 people for sports matches. The ground is owned by the Cricket Club of India.

Said Arun Dhumal, Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman, “The Women’s Premier League will be played from March 4th to March 26th in Mumbai.”

Dhumal also confirmed that the auction will take place on February 13th in Mumbai, a day after India’s T20 World Cup match against Pakistan.

Cricket Centre, Mumbai (India)-based the Indian Premier League (IPL) is a men’s T20 franchise cricket league in India. It is annually contested by 10 teams based in seven Cities and three States. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007. Brijesh Patel is the incumbent Chairman of IPL. It is usually held annually in Summer across India between March to May and has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme.

The IPL is the most-attended cricket league in the world. In 2014, it was ranked sixth by average attendance among all sports leagues. In 2010, the IPL became the first sporting event in the world to be broadcast live on YouTube. The brand value of IPL in 2022 was ₹90,038 crore (US$11 billion). According to BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed ₹1,150 crore (US$140 million) to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Indian economy.

‘Hindustan Times’ further stated that with the five teams fetching ₹4669.99 crore and the BCCI selling the media rights for ₹951 crore, the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is the second biggest T20 League in the world behind the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Apart from the three IPL team owners – Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals – Capri Global Holdings (Lucknow) and Adani Sportsline have bought the five franchises.

Each team will have a purse of ₹12 crore at the players’ auction next month and will need to buy a minimum of 15 players and maximum of 18. Up to five overseas players, including one from the associate member country, will be allowed in the playing eleven.

A total of 22 games will be played in the inaugural season with the top-ranked team in the league stage qualifying directly for the final. The second and third placed teams will battle out for a place in the title clash.
