The Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin on March 26th and will be played in Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra (India).

‘The Indian Express’ stated that the IPL will be a 10-team affair this season after the Indian Board added two new teams: Ahmedabad’s Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

The average price tag of a team now stands at Rs 6,357 crore, a whopping 17-fold jump in just 13 years. The franchise is now one of the most valued sporting leagues in the world.

According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), 55 matches will be played at the 33,108-capacity Wankhede Stadium, the 20,000-capacity Brabourne Stadium and the 55,000-capacity DY Patil Sports Stadium in Mumbai while Pune’s 37,000-capacity Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium will be the venue for the remaining 15 games.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional men’s Twenty20 cricket league contested by 10 teams based out of 10 Indian Cities. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.

Mumbai-based the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the governing body for cricket in India and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It is an autonomous organization and does not come under the National Sports Federation of India.

‘The Indian Express’ further stated that the decision to organize the tournament in one State was taken during BCCI’s IPL Governing Council virtual meet held recently. The members earlier contemplated organizing IPL matches at respective home venues, but taking cue from last year when BCCI felt that traveling enabled breach of secure bio-bubble, the Board doesn’t want to take any further risks.

Stated a BCCI official, “We didn’t want to have a situation like last season where we had to call off IPL midway after there was a bubble breach in IPL teams. It’s better to have the tournament being played in one State (Maharashtra) where teams can travel by bus.”

The Indian Board has finalized MCA-BKC ground, DY Patil and Brabourne as venues for practice for 10 IPL teams and is looking to add a few more to the list. It is expected that Thane’s 33,000-capacity Dadoji Kondadev Stadium and MCA-Kandivali ground will be used for IPL team practice sessions.

Women’s IPL

The Indian Board is also planning to have a women’s T20 exhibition game in Pune. In addition to this there was a discussion on having a full-fledged women’s IPL going ahead next year.

IPL 2022

  • The tournament will kickstart from March 26th, 2022 and the final will be played on May 29th, 2022;
  • A total of 70 league matches will be played across four international standard venues in Mumbai and Pune. The venue for the playoff matches will be decided later; and
  • Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium will host 20 matches, Brabourne Stadium will have 15 matches and the DY Patil Stadium will host 20 matches. While 15 matches will be played at Pune’s MCA International Stadium.
    • All teams will play:
      • Four matches each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium; and
      • Three match each at Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium, Pune.

The 10 teams will play a total of 14 league matches (seven home matches and seven away matches) totaling to 70 league matches, followed by the four playoff matches. Each team will play five teams twice and the remaining four teams only once (two only home and two only away).

To decide on the above, teams have been assigned in two virtual groups based on the number of IPL Championships won followed by the number of final matches played by the respective teams.
