The Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) will host this season’s Copa Libertadores final, with the Copa Sudamericana decider to be played in Montevideo, Uruguay.

‘AP’ stated that Alejandro Dominguez, President of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), announced the above decision on his social media channels.

The 78,838-capacity Maracanã Stadium, officially named the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is an association football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The stadium is part of a complex that includes an arena known by the name of Maracanãzinho, which means ‘The Little Maracanã’ in Portuguese.

The Copa Libertadores is a seasonal association football competition that was established in 1960. It begins in mid-January and ends with the final in November of the same year. The Copa Libertadores is open to the league champions of CONMEBOL member-associations and clubs finishing from second to fourth position in the stronger leagues of the region, such as the Brazilian league, are also included.

The Copa Sudamericana is the second most important competition in South America at the club level. For this reason, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has changed the format of the cup several times in recent years to make it more attractive.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) is the continental governing body of football in South America and it is one of FIFA’s six continental confederations. The oldest continental confederation in the world, its headquarters are located in Luque, Paraguay, near Asunción.

‘AP’ further stated that the Maracanã Stadium hosted the Copa Libertadores final in 2020. This year’s match will be played on November 11th.

A decision on which stadium in Montevideo will host the Copa Sudamericana final will be made later this year. The match will be played on October 28th.
