Accor Stadium roof: Ball in taxpayers’ court

The New South Wales (NSW) Premier Chris Minns remains tight-lipped over plans for a roof on Sydney’s (Australia) Accor Stadium and said that it is finally the taxpayers who will decide.

‘9now.nine.com.au’ stated that there are calls to build a permanent roof on Sydney’s Accor Stadium, similar to that of Las Vegas’ (US) 65,000-capacity Allegiant Stadium, in hopes of attracting more events to the City.

The 83,000-capacity Stadium Australia (currently known as the Accor Stadium for sponsorship purposes) is a multipurpose stadium located in the Olympic Park section of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The Sydney Olympic Park is a suburb in Greater Western Sydney, Australia. Its located 13 kilometers West of Sydney’s central business district (CBD), in the City of Parramatta Council.

‘9now.nine.com.au’ further stated that Premier Minns said he didn’t have any official announcements to make, but said his Government was looking at the idea closely.

The above comes after the Minister for Sport Steve Kamper visited Las Vegas’ 65,000-seat indoor Allegiant Stadium to watch the National Rugby League (NRL) double-header recently.

Sydney (Australia)-based the National Rugby League (NRL) is a professional rugby league competition in Australasia which contains clubs from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and New Zealand.

The American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift was last month forced to delay her performance during her history-making Eras Tour due to a storm.

It’s hoped a roof would mean the future events and concerts would be weather-proofed, hopefully enticing large acts to the City.

Minns didn’t rule out the move but stated it was ultimately the taxpayers’ decision – “I don’t want to say we’re not going ahead with it, but like all these things, it’s not my money, it’s the taxpayers’ money. We need to make sure it’s spent wisely and we don’t have the price tag on it yet. I don’t have an announcement to make right now, but we’re looking at it closely.”
