FC Barcelona sustainable mobility plan for the reopening Image: FC Barcelona

The LaLiga team FC Barcelona and the Barcelona City Council (Spain) recently presented a Sustainable Mobility Plan.

‘fcbarcelona.com’ stated that the above plan was presented to speed up ingress to the new-look Barça home – the Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain – and egress from the venue and make it a smooth exercise as the facility will soon see the partial return of sporting activities.

The above is, in fact, a three-pronged objective – apart from the entry-exit facet, the other two aspects are – sustainable mobility (a concept that aims to make transportation more efficient, accessible and environmental-friendly. It’s also known as sustainable transport or Green driving) and no transportation bottlenecks for the fans when they come to the stadium from their homes. The above plan also envisages leaving enough walking space for the pedestrians.

The FC Barcelona, also known as Barça, is a professional football club based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, that competes in the LaLiga, the top flight of Spanish football.

The under-renovation 99,354-capacity Spotify Camp Nou is a stadium in Les Corts, Barcelona (Spain) and the home of the LaLiga club FC Barcelona since its opening in 1957.

The top-notch is presently playing at the 55,926-capacity Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Spain.

The Spotify Camp Nou expansion and extensive renovation to lend it a state-of-the-art look is experiencing significant delays. The reopening is now likely to be pushed to September 2025 rather than the previously targeted March 2025. The redecorated arena will initially accommodate 60,000 fans while construction continues. It will ultimately expand to a capacity of 105,000 making it the largest stadium in Europe.

‘fcbarcelona.com’ further stated that the above Sustainable Mobility Plan is within the framework of the Espai Barça Commission for Mobility Monitoring (a body established by FC Barcelona to oversee and manage the mobility aspects of their large-scale renovation project) and the residents of Les Corts were also informed about the plan specifics beforehand.

The Espai Barça is a €1.45 billion renovation project for FC Barcelona’s facilities in Barcelona, Spain. The project includes the total transformation of the Barça home – the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium – and the 6,000-capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff in Barcelona operated by the Barça and which comprises the club’s training facility and the youth academy. The project is intended to improve the club’s future and help the top-of-the-heap club enjoy an edge in the soccer world.

The FC Barcelona’s return to the Spotify Camp Nou will be staggered. The first phase will see the stadium operate at approximately 60 percent of the expected final capacity holding a maximum of 65,000 spectators. The ‘Blaugrana’ home had a capacity to hold over 99,000 spectators before the refurbishment work began.

The Sustainable Mobility Plan for partial return to the Spotify Camp Nou is structured around the following areas – streamlining the different modes of transport with particular focus on the fans that will come to the stadium on foot as they comprise the biggest slice of the transportation modes pie (36.5 percent). The smooth exit of the coaches, proper management of the cab services and restricted entry for the private vehicles (motorcycles and cars) in the residential areas.

Within a 1.5 km radius from the Spotify Camp Nou a parking area will be set up to park 8,000 cars in underground car parks plus 1,500 vehicles can be parked on designated spots in the highways. The plan also ensures that the pavements remain free for the ease of the pedestrians and a space will also be reserved for people with reduced mobility. Plans have been put in place for strong lighting arrangements and a bicycle lane has also been added.
