On September 27th, 2023 the Serie A club AC Milan officially announced their standalone stadium project in the San Donato area of Italy and submitted the requisite documents to the City Council.

‘MILAN REPORTS’ stated that on January 25th, 2024, the Mayor of San Donato Milanese Francesco Squeri officially presented AC Milan’s new stadium project and with this the ball has got rolling for the top-flight to build their new home in the San Francesco area of San Donato in Milan, Italy.

Milan’s ambitious stadium project in San Donato has taken a significant step forward. Following AC Milan’s Board of Directors’ decision to acquire key land parcels crucial for the project, the Mayor’s office is set to unveil the first official move in what promises to be a transformative journey.

The AC Milan, or simply Milan, is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy (Italy). Founded in 1899, the club competes in Serie A, the top tier of Italian football, and has spent its entire history there with the exception of the 1980-1981 and 1982-1983 seasons.

The San Siro Stadium, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is a football stadium in Milan, Italy. It’s the largest stadium in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, with a seating capacity of 80,018. It serves as the digs of the top-rung clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan.

The AC Milan’s new stadium project includes a 70,000-seat stadium, club headquarters and a museum. The stadium will be located in the San Donato suburb of Milan, and the club hopes to move to the new facility before the 2028-2029 seasons. The stadium will be built in the shape of a rectangle with rounded curves and it will be a mixed-use development featuring hotels, offices, museums, restaurants, an official club store, two-level parking for 3,500 cars, and a 3,000-seat auditorium for shows and cultural events.

‘MILAN REPORTS’ further stated that the above development has been made possible as the officials of the Municipality of San Donato have finished the technical evaluation works based on the stadium project presented by the ‘Rossoneri’ in September 2023.

The City Council has greenlighted the stadium project.

Of course, the Municipal authorities have been asked to take a close look into matters pertaining to traffic and the environment as per a request made by the SportLifeCity.

The SportLifeCity is the company that owns the land for AC Milan’s new stadium. The company has development rights for the land in San Donato Milanese. The company is also involved in a project to transform the San Francesco area in San Donato Milanese. The project is designed to accommodate various architectural, urban, landscape, and infrastructural components.

Informed Massimiliano Mistretta, Councilor for Public Works and Mobility for San Donato, “We will be holding talks with all the entities involved. Though adjustments will have to be done but overall there is an air of optimism and excitement prevailing among all over AC Milan’s planned venue in San Donato.”

Added Massimo Zuin, Sports Assessor of San Donato, “The venue project can now get rolling. The administrative exercise will begin soon.”

It seems that AC Milan will be able to move forward with their San Donato project without any hiccups. Meanwhile, the Municipality of Milan’s last-ditch efforts to redevelop the San Siro Stadium with the price tag pegged at €300 million in their bid to keep both Inter Milan and AC Milan at San Siro is generating a lot of interest. However, both Inter and Milan are tight-lipped over the whole Arco Associati studio project. It is unlikely that the top-flight clubs will have a change of heart as they are firm on moving forward with their Rozzano and San Donato plans.

The Arco Associati studio is behind a proposal to renovate the San Siro Stadium. The proposal would create a 75,000-seat stadium, which are about 800 seats less than the current capacity. The proposal was presented to the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, by Forza Italia (a center-right political party of Italy).

The Arco Associati is a studio of professional architects and engineers founded in 2001 by Giulio Fenyves. The studio’s services include analysis, study and project realization. The studio’s work involves meeting, preparing projects and working in a variety of locations, including museums, bars, construction sites, and workshops. The studio is based in Milan, Italy.

Mayor Squeri and his team are unfazed over the recent San Siro development as they feel that AC Milan will not do a volte-face as regards building their own home arena in San Donato. In fact, the owner of AC Milan, Gerry Cardinale, is very keen on going ahead with the San Donato project.
