The Argentine Primera División club – Club Atlético Boca Juniors (Argentina) – Presidential candidate Jorge Reale unveiled majestic plans in the beginning of March to build a new venue for the top-flight with an eye on the Boca Presidential elections to be held in December. The renderings of Architect Enrique Lombardi have been unveiled in this regard.

‘marca en zona’ stated that the planned new facility of Boca Juniors would sit on the Demarchi Island to the extreme South of Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It would sit 1,300 meters from the present residence of the Boca Juniors – the La Bombonera in Buenos Aires. Access to the stadium would be through three pedestrian bridges that would facilitate crossing the South Dock.

The Club Atlético Boca Juniors is an Argentine sports club headquartered in La Boca, a neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The club is mostly known for its professional football team which, since its promotion in 1913, has always played in the Argentine Primera División (the top division of the Argentine football league system).

The 54,000-capacity Alberto José Armando Stadium is a football stadium located in La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Widely known as the La Bombonera due to its shape, with a ‘flat’ stand on one side of the pitch and three steep stands around the rest of the stadium. It serves as the home ground of the Club Atlético Boca Juniors.

‘marca en zona’ further stated that the planned venue will come armed with a capacity to hold 112,000 spectators (the current one has space for 54,000 fans), 444 VIP boxes and another 192 tourist boxes, in addition to increasing the parking areas of the stadium from 134 to 4,000 spaces.

Venue Matters

‘Olé’ stated that the Boca Juniors Presidential elections are approaching and the planned venue of Boca Juniors will be the main poll plank. Reale from Mendoza (Argentina), who will be a candidate for the Presidential elections to be held in December, is making a strong pitch for building a new facility for the top-of-the-heap club which will be in position to accommodate 106,000 spectators and will be lodged in Demarchi Island. Reale has also shared a model of the planned arena.

Reale-Lombardi Venue Vision:

  • Four hundred and forty four (444) VIP boxes;
  • One hundred and ninety two (192) tourist boxes;
  • Seventy eight (78) broadcast booths;
  • Four thousand (4,000) parking spaces within the stadium precincts (compared to 134 spots available in the Boca Juniors present home venue);
  • Three promenades that would link the present La Bombonera with Avenue Pedro de Mendoza and Dársena Sur, to be linked from that point to the new stadium; and
  • The immediate neighborhood skirting the stadium and the Demarchi Island will be connected by three new pedestrian bridges, and boats will be allowed to enter and exit the South Dock.

‘Olé’ further stated that the Boca Juniors home pitch has undergone significant upgrade work in the last three-and-a-half years and there has been a slight expansion in the stadium capacity. Of course, there has been no upgrade work as far as the ‘Bombonera 360’ is concerned.

Reale-Lombardi venue vision has elicited a lot of positive response.

Reale, for his part, believes that though they want to expand the La Bombonera but the same will not be a cakewalk as there is too much of red tapism involved in the entire exercise and making it an 80,000-capacity venue would be good enough.

Lombardi View

Lombardi is the architect in charge of the Reale project. He is an ace when it comes to designing smart stadia. He said that if the above plan materializes, the La Bombonera will have to be “built from a scratch” and asserted that only a spiffy home venue can aid in the brisk sale of tickets as the present crop of fans want to enter a stadium which boasts crème de la crème facilities.

He also underlined the fact that though fans are very nostalgic about iconic venues and feels that such venues should keep their pristine sheen intact, nevertheless, in today’s age when several countries around the world boast the most avant-garde venues, just keeping intact the venue in its pristine form will not help in the facilities’ financial wheels stay well-oiled. And the same counts for the La Bombonera Stadium.

Lombardi also stressed that a sound acoustics system works in favor of a venue which they plan to do with the Boca Juniors planned venue. The stands would be covered but it would not be a “100 percent closed stadium. We would try to build a robust acoustics system a la the 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in London, UK, which is very impressive.”

FIFA Show

‘nss SPORTS’ stated that plans are being drawn out to build a new digs for Boca Juniors with an eye on the 2030 FIFA World Cup™ for which Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay officially submitted a joint bid on February 7th this year. If the planned venue work goes ahead, and if Argentina-Chile-Paraguay-Uruguay lands the 2030 show, the Boca Juniors new home would be the perfect spot to host the FIFA soccer show finals.

‘nss SPORTS’ further stated that even if the Boca Juniors venue plans materializes, the La Bombonera would be used for hosting the women’s and youth teams matches and it will also be converted to a kind of museum which fans would love to visit to take a walk down the stadium memory lane.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 24th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men’s national teams of the member-associations of FIFA. The event will mark the centenary of the first World Cup.
