Nathan Burk works with the Boise State University, US, and he and Chris Roberts of Opsis Architecture talk about the Boise State’s North End Zone renovation project at the Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho, US, which is starting to come together and nears completion.

Nathan Burk joined Boise State Athletics in October 2021 and serves as the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Operations and Governance.

In an engaging conversation with ‘Coliseum’, Nathan Burk, Senior Associate Athletic Director, Boise State University, US, tells Chris Roberts Principal, Opsis Architecture, US, that the North End Zone renovation project of the Albertsons Stadium as far as it pertains to football, “We want these games to be an event. We want people to come out and be engaged with each individual fan where they are, whether they be a casual observer or tag along or whether they are a hardcore fan or whether it is just a business owner that’s looking for an opportunity to have a few hours with the client and kind of connect in a different manner than typically is done in a boardroom or a meeting room setting. So, that’s the goal behind the North End Zone project.” The project is all about fulfilling every individual’s needs.

Boise State University

The Boise State University is a public research university in Boise, Idaho, United States. Founded in 1932 by the Episcopal Church it became an independent junior college in 1934 and has been awarding baccalaureate and Master’s degrees since 1965.

Albertsons Stadium

The 36,387-seat Albertsons Stadium is an outdoor athletic stadium in Western United States located on the campus of the Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. It is the home of the Boise State Broncos of the Mountain West Conference.

Albertsons Stadium North End Zone Project

The Albertsons Stadium North End Zone project boasts new premium spaces including one of the field-level suites, the Lower Club where the fans with tickets in the North End Zone can cheer on the Broncos as they enter the field and the Foothills Club which will be an open-air bar and lounge area located on the concourse.

Nathan Burk began by stating that the success of the team – Boise State Broncos – “dictates the operations of the stadium. We have had tremendous history of success and are still ranked among the Top 10-15 nationally which has helped in building a legacy in 2024. In 2024, we had seven home games and seven sellouts and that set the bar. That’s our new bar.”

Chris Roberts pointed out about the long-term vision of the North End Zone project and how it is preparing for the Albertson Stadium’s future builds.

Burk informed that 12 years ago they built the Stueckle Sky Center which is their suites, lounge and club level zone “but beyond and below that we actually didn’t have any premium seating next to the field and so as the North End Zone project developed it originally started with maybe some leisure seating in the wings and more premium in the middle but we shifted to all premium as we collected the data from our market study to see what our fans were missing and what they truly wanted and so that really kind of outlined the programming on what happened on the top of the Bowl. We wanted to make sure that this space was able to be flexible and to adapt itself to the event that is going on and so that’s really driven all these spaces under here. We are developing this just like we did with our Stueckle Sky Center – 365 days a year, 24 hours a day event space.”

Burk informed that the North End Zone project was more like a convention space and very flexible – “It’s like a football stadium and we can turn these spaces into whatever they need to be for that day and then tomorrow they are going to look and feel and operate entirely differently. The other five days a week when there is no football game our student-athletes will be using it as a dining hall. When a concert builds in that all becomes back-of-house.”

Connection Piece

Continued Burk, “We are on the main artery to downtown, we are a stone’s throw away from the capital of Idaho and the capital building in Boise there and so this is really going to be a huge connection piece for us, for our student-athletes, for our community, and for the rest of the world.”

Roberts informed that Opsis Architecture didn’t do any brick-and-mortar concessions on the North End Zone project.

Burk informed that the Owner is the State Government and “not a very wealthy individual. We have to do more with less. Our expectations don’t match our resources and for us we have to find innovative and incredible ways to drive revenue which is what the space is entirely designed to use. All along the concourse we made sure to install electrical data connections to the input, merchandises to input, pop-up kiosks all along the exterior perimeter and that concourse is much larger than life than it appears on say a drawing. We then look at this large 20-acre parking lot that surrounds our stadium and then connects us to the main artery in downtown on Broadway there and how that then flows into this project. The restaurants count for General Admission and the premium for the rest of us. It is not a huge project but it is designed to be flexible and adaptable and it is also designed to solve the immediate needs with an eye on the future.”

Wrap-up

Nathan Burk concluded by stating, “One of the great opportunities for the Albertsons Stadium North End Zone project is that the project lies between one of our busiest areas in the campus and you have the football operations building just in the corner on the side of the field. The field that is in the middle gets 20,000-plus visitors a year just to see the field, 1,000 events are held in the Stueckle Sky Center every year and so it is a very busy area. The North End Zone is our real interest in the field right now as we look at expanding some field and access in the future to the South. We have to adapt and we have to absorb several million dollars in new operational costs this year with no real plan on how to do that. And so, it is all about connecting with the key community stakeholders, finding ways on our own to go and be more efficient in our operation which are already pretty lean and mean. That means we have to go out and generate new revenue which is what this project does for us – it helps us generate that revenue to keep the lights on and to keep our student-athletes in the building which then facilitates the fans’ flow to our games.”
