Gemswell Surf Madrid secured funding sports city venture at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium Image: Gemswell Surf Madrid

The Gemswell Surf Madrid, set to become the largest surf lagoon in Europe, has fully secured its €60+ million funding clearing the path for construction at the LaLiga team Atlético de Madrid’s ambitious Ciudad del Deporte Sports City project next to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

‘outsidesportlab.com’ stated that the 23,000 m² surf lagoon is being developed by Stoneweg InfraSport – a joint venture between Stoneweg and the Teras Capital – in partnership with the Atlético de Madrid.

The Club Atlético de Madrid, commonly referred to as the Atlético Madrid or simply Atlético and colloquially as Atleti, is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid (Spain) that plays in the LaLiga, the highest level of the Spanish football league system. The club play their home games at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano which has a capacity of 70,692.

The 70,692-capacity Metropolitano Stadium, also referred to as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in Madrid (Spain) located in the Rosas neighborhood in the San Blas-Canillejas district. It has been the home stadium of the Atlético Madrid since 2017.

The Ciudad del Deporte Sports City project is a transformational sports and entertainment complex that will reshape Atlético’s future. This ambitious project includes a 5,000-seat stadium, five new training pitches and the public sports areas such as full athletics track and a community football field. Construction on five plots surrounding the Metropolitano Stadium is progressing rapidly with a partial opening scheduled for the second half of 2026.

The Stoneweg Infrasports is a joint venture with Teras Capital dedicated to the development of surf parks around Europe.

Madrid (Spain)-based the Teras Capital is an investment firm focusing on the origination, development and management of differentiated transactions in telecommunications and sports infrastructures.

‘outsidesportlab.com’ further stated that financing combines a syndicated loan led by Banco Santander and the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), equity from the Atlético members and a €15.7 million participating loan from the European funds via Buenavista NextGen Urbano.

The Banco Santander S.A., trading as the Santander Group, is a Spanish multinational financial services company based in Santander (capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria, Spain) with operative offices in Boadilla del Monte (town in Spain).

The Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, better known by its initials BBVA, is a Spanish multinational financial services company headquartered in Bilbao with operative offices in Madrid (Spain). It is one of the largest financial institutions in the world and is present mainly in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, South America, Turkey, Italy, Romania, and Germany.

Buenavista NextGen Urbano invests in urban development projects, sustainable tourism and affordable housing in Spain.

Key Project Details

The Gemswell Surf Madrid is expected to open in Spring 2027 and will come equipped with 3,000 m² of restaurants, 500 m² of specialised retail, a surf school, corporate event spaces, and experiential activity.

It is projected that 500,000 annual visitors will visit the attraction and more than 100 direct jobs will be generated.

Ramón Romero, head honcho of Stoneweg InfraSport, described the funding as “a decisive milestone” that demonstrates strong confidence from the leading banks and the European institutions in the project’s model. He added that it “consolidates the final phase of Madrid’s development” and strengthens Gemswell’s strategy to build a European network of surf parks in prime locations.
