DLA+ Architecture & Interior Design has been picked by South Korean retail giant Shinsegae Group (SSG) as the design architect for the Cheongna SSG Baseball Stadium.

The Pittsburgh-based sports design firm will plan the new domed home for the SSG Landers who play in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).

The project, located in Incheon, South Korea, just west of Seoul, will be the world’s first baseball stadium with an integrated shopping mall and the first privately funded professional sporting venue in South Korea.

The scheme comprises two major components: a covered/dome baseball stadium with a seating capacity of 21,000 and the Starfield shopping mall.

The stadium is planned to operate year-round as a multi-purpose Sports & Entertainment venue hosting various events including sports, concerts, community and private events. The design of the stadium focuses on delivering unparalleled and enhanced fan and guest experiences for all visitors and attendees.

Prior to the award, DLA+ assisted SSG with Strategic Vision Planning and provided support throughout the project enabling process.

The design team includes:

  • Stadium Design Architect: DLA+ Architecture & Interior Design
  • Stadium Structural Engineer: Thornton Tomasetti
  • Stadium M/E/P Engineer: ME Engineers
  • Shopping Mall Design Architect: CRTKL
  • Local Architect: Haeahn Architecture

The SSG Landers are a South Korean professional baseball team. The team was originally established as the SK Wyverns but was renamed as the SSG Landers in 2021 after Shinsegae acquired the team from the SK Group. They are a member of the KBO League. Based in Incheon, they play their home games at the 23,000-capacity Incheon SSG Landers Field in Incheon, South Korea.

The Korea Baseball Organization is the governing body for the professional leagues of baseball in South Korea. The KBO was founded in 1981 and has governed two leagues: The KBO League and the KBO Futures League since 1982.

South Korea currently has one domed baseball stadium: The Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, home of the KBO club Kiwoom Heroes. The stadium is primarily used for baseball and has a capacity for 16,744 spectators for baseball games.

The Landers’ current home, the Incheon SSG Landers Field, opened in 2002.
