Hanam in South Korea to develop a new entertainment district Image: Hanam City

The Hanam City (South Korea) Mayor Lee Hyeon-jae announced recently at a ceremony held at the Hanam City Hall that he has struck a win-win cooperation business agreement with Seoul’s Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Soo-hee for the “creation of K-Star World, including a K-POP concert hall, and development of the upper Han River area”.

‘Government of Hanam City’ stated that the Hanam Mayor Hyeon-jae and the Gangdong-gu Mayor Soo-hee reiterated in the deal-signing ceremony to establish close cooperation between Hanam City and Gangdong-gu.

As part of the above deal, both the Mayors agreed to cooperate with each other on creating the nation’s best cultural and video industry cluster based on K-culture (Korean culture), developing the upper reaches of the Han River and becoming a hub for the Eastern Metropolitan area.

Maintained Hanam City Mayor Lee Hyeon-jae, “The Hanam City and Gangdong-gu should take advantage of the fact that the K-culture is taking the world by storm. We will create an environment where the Hanam citizens and Gangdong-gu residents can come and enjoy in a state-of-the-art performance hall. This will be South Korea’s best cultural tourism complex.”

Added Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Soo-hee, “We are accelerating development activities along the Han Riverside, focusing on the Godeok Biz Valley and the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway, where the IKEA and JYP Entertainment are scheduled to move in. But we are also facing hiccups in development works due to various regulations in place such as the green belt and water source protection zone. With the above agreement we hope there will be relaxation in the regulations as far as the upper reaches of the Han River is concerned and we also hope that the K-Star World will prove to be a representative cultural and tourism center of South Korea.”

The Hanam City K- Star World, the core of the above business deal, is a project to build a large K- pop performance hall, movie studio, video culture complex, theme park, hotel, and other supporting facilities on a 900,000 m2 site on the Misa Island. The project would generate 50,000 jobs and an annual economic turnover of approximately 10 trillion.

In particular, Gangdong-gu is planning to create a deck-type waterside promenade (skywalk) in a portion of the Han Riverside connecting the Cheonho District and the Amsa District in Gangdong-gu to the Godeok Ecological Park as part of the Hangang Renaissance 2.0 Project.

The Godeok Riverside Ecological Park is a large public park in Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu, South Korea. The park is close to the Hangang River and features forests, grasslands and wetlands. It’s also home to many animals, and is a popular spot for the bird-watchers.

The Hangang Renaissance 2.0 Project, also known as the ‘Great Hangang River’ Project, is a project that aims to restore the relationship between people, water and Nature. The project also aims to revive the ecology of the Han River and provide guidelines for its management and use.

‘Government of Hanam City’ further stated that the above deal best exemplifies the robust urban competitive spirit of the Eastern Metropolitan area driven by the common goals of the local Governments.

In September 2023, the Hanam City signed a business agreement with SPHERE, a famous American entertainment company, to host a spherical, state-of-the-art performance hall, and last November, at the Emergency Economic Ministers’ Meeting and Export Investment Policy Meeting, the City signed a business agreement for the K-Star World project. The project has been put under the fast-track category by the Government and work is gaining momentum.

The above ceremony was also graced by the Gangdong-gu Council Chairman Cho Dong-tak and the People Power Party International Chairman Lee Jae-young.
