River Plate El Monumental renovation update Image: River Plate

The Argentine professional sports club River Plate (Argentina) is continuing with the total transformation of its residence – the Mâs Monumental Stadium – with the goal of making it South America’s highest capacity stadium, capable of holding 81,000 spectators (57,722 seating and 23,278 standing).

And while moving ahead with its redecoration plans, the top-flight has ensured to take pages out of the books of the most expansive and luxurious venues of the world.

‘River Plate’ stated that in order to increase the capacity of the venue, a new tier will be added closer to the pitch and several improvements will be made to the lower grandstands to facilitate better sightlines for fans.

Club Atlético River Plate, commonly known as River Plate, is an Argentine professional sports club based in the Núñez neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Founded in 1901, the club is named after the English name for the City’s estuary, Río de la Plata. Although many sports are practiced at the club, River Plate is best known for its professional football team, which has won Argentina’s Primera División championship a record 37 times, its latest title in 2021. Domestic achievements also include 14 national cups, with the 2021 Trofeo de Campeones as the most recent, making River Plate the country’s most successful team in domestic competitions with a total of 49 top-division titles.

The 72,054-capacity Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti, also referred to as Estadio Mâs Monumental for sponsorship reasons, and popularly known as the River Plate Stadium, Monumental de Núñez, or simply El Monumental, is a stadium in Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina, home of the football club River Plate.

River Plate is going ahead with carrying out a total redevelopment of its home ground while maintaining the pristine sheen of the iconic stadium. The facility will wear an avant-garde look to measure up to the standards of the spiffy stadia coming up all over the globe.

‘River Plate’ further stated that the Mâs Monumental Stadium enjoys the first and only hybrid grass playing field with heating and aeration systems in the country. The Mâs Monumental Stadium as part of its redecoration work will come armed with new lower grandstands, 180 boxes, 926 hospitality seats, a 24/7 restaurant, 360° mobility in boxes, three new parking levels, and a new Instituto River, among other state-of-the-art facilities.

More than 200 construction crew are working through the sweat of their brows six days in a week and have poured 4,000 cubic meters of concrete so far.

Work Progress Update:

  • Centenario lower grandstand – It’s the grandstand where work has progressed the most;
  • Ninety percent of the concrete work is over (tier stage); and
  • Creation of new access, Puerta Maraton, for vehicle entry (adjacent to the Belgrano grandstand).

Centenario Boxes

  • The construction fence has been placed to start building the new boxes;
  • Restrooms and grandstand bars have been torn down;
  • Thirty boxes and a 24/7 restaurant (500-square-meter indoor area + 215-square-meter outdoor area) will be built, facing the River neighborhood and the playing field, with new circulation spaces and cladding; and
  • The foundation work for the elevator tower has been completed.

San Martin lower grandstand

  • One third of the concrete work is over (tier stage);
  • Work on the single exit tunnel leading to the playing field is 70 percent over (excavation and casting works). The support structure construction work is in progress; and
  • Very soon the seats will be installed.

Sivori Lower Grandstand

  • The foundations have been laid (they will support the whole structure); and
  • Concrete work is in progress at the new gates.

Belgrano Lower Grandstand

The foundation laying work is presently in progress.

Color Combination

The color choice has been made in such a manner that it gives a neat look to the stadium. The gray color identifies with concrete – the basic material that makes up the Mâs Monumental Stadium.

The gray color will also help in saving money in the mid- to long-term as it lasts longer and does not wear out in open air stadiums that are directly affected by UV rays.

The club’s new branding includes different shades of gray as a complementary color to white, red and black, which represent River Plate.

One gray shade has been taken as the basis for the full design of the Mâs Monumental Stadium, thus taking leaves out of the books of the world’s most luxe stadia – the 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England (UK), the 81,044-capacity Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain, the 70,000-capacity SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California (US), the 65,000-capacity Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, US, the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, US, and the 42,372-capacity Arena da Baixada Stadium in Curitiba, Brazil.
