Europa-Park Stadium roof to boast solar array

The stadium of German football club SC Freiburg – Europa-Park Stadium in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, will host a 2.4 MW rooftop solar array that will be built with heterojunction modules provided by Swiss manufacturer Meyer Burger. The solar array is presently under construction on the roof of the Europa-Park Stadium.

The ‘pv magazine’ stated that around 6,000 solar modules from Meyer Burger will cover almost the entire roof area of the Europa-Park Stadium.

Sport-Club Freiburg e.V., commonly known as SC Freiburg or just Freiburg, is a German football club, based in the City of Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg (Germany). It plays in the Bundesliga, having been promoted as champions from the 2. Bundesliga in 2016.

The 34,700-capacity SC-Stadion, known as the Europa-Park Stadion for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in Freiburg, Germany. It primarily serves as the home stadium of SC Freiburg, replacing the club’s former home, the Schwarzwald-Stadion.

Meyer Burger, headquartered in Thun (Switzerland), is a globally active mechanical engineering company, which is primarily known for its production facilities in the photovoltaic industry. Meyer Burger develops and produces systems with which solar cells can be manufactured and electrically connected for use in solar modules.

Swiss solar manufacturer Meyer Burger Technology has provided its heterojunction panels for the project, which is the world’s second largest PV system built on a stadium roof to date.

The project was selected in a tender floated for commercial PV projects recently by the German Federal network agency and will be developed by Badenova Warmeplus, SC Freiburg’s energy and environmental partner.

The ‘pv magazine’ further stated that around 6,000 high-performance solar modules from Meyer Burger will be installed on a 15,000m2 roof area. Badenova Warmeplus is investing around €2.3 million in the system, which it will operate over a 20-year period.

Said Badenova Board Member Heinz-Werner Hölscher, “In order to meet the high sustainability standards of the City of Freiburg and the sports club, as well as our own standards, we consciously rely on high-performance modules that are manufactured in Germany.”

Stated Moritz Borgmann, Chief Commercial Officer at Meyer Burger, “This clearly puts us in the photovoltaic Champions League. Solar energy offers a lot of potential to reduce emissions using already built-up areas, to become climate-neutral and to give climate protection more drive with a forward-looking technology – not only for soccer clubs.”
