The Stadion Feijenoord, the entity which runs the show of the De Kuip in Rotterdam, Netherlands, home of the Dutch top-flight club Feyenoord Rotterdam, is all set to be brought into the fold of the Eredivisie team to facilitate the makeover of their home ground.

To enable the above merger the approval of a qualified majority of Stadion Feijenoord’s shareholders will be required. The merger move proposal is presently being worked on and is likely to materialize before the end of the present Eredivisie season – that is by June 2025.

‘FEYENOORD ROTTERDAM’ stated that the Feyenoord Rotterdam and the Stadion Feijenoord have signed a letter of intent on the possible merger. The above was announced at Stadion Feijenoord’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held recently.

The 51,177-capacity Stadion Feijenoord, more commonly known by its nickname De Kuip, is a stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It was completed in 1937. The name is derived from the Feijenoord district in Rotterdam and from the club with the same name. The stadium’s original capacity was 64,000. It serves as the home ground of the Feyenoord Rotterdam.

The Feyenoord Rotterdam is a Dutch professional football club based in Rotterdam which plays in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football.

‘FEYENOORD ROTTERDAM’ further stated that the Stadion Feijenoord shareholders were apprised in the above meeting that the planned merger was long in the wish list as the Stadion Feijenoord is no longer in a position to keep the De Kuip futuristic on their own strength talking in terms of the finances.

In order for De Kuip to be up and running in the next 15 years extensive maintenance and upgrades will be required in order to meet the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) guidelines for the venue to continue staging European football. The safety quotient of the facility also needs to be improved.

Substantial investment is also required to refurbish the eateries so as to attract visitors by the droves. The stadium redevelopment price tag will stand at circa €30 to €50 million.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Since 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

If the above merger comes to fruition it will pave the way for a robust cohesion between the Stadion Feijenoord, the Feyenoord Rotterdam and the stakeholders.
