France clampdown on stadia amid Omicron rise

The Omicron variant’s rapid spread across France has prompted the French Government to set new guidelines to arrest the highly transmissible virus. The Ligue 1 clubs have also been affected.

The ‘kicker’ stated that following the footsteps of Germany, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, France has also laid down the rule that only 5,000 spectators will be admitted to major open-air events and 2,000 will be permitted in halls. The rule came into effect from December 27^th, 2021.

The rule is initially valid for three weeks and all sports clubs, including professional football clubs, will be affected.

While Germany has further tightened restrictions, England, which has registered a rapid rise in Omicron cases, has said that reimposing coronavirus restrictions in England would be “an absolute last resort” and that the country must “try to live with COVID-19”.

After the winter break, the majority of Bundesliga games will again be played in front of empty ranks.
