Fresh lease on life for Lausanne venue

The City Council of Lausanne has gone back on its plans to demolish the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne, Switzerland, and would instead reconfigure the venue.

‘bluewin.ch’ stated that the stadium which opened its gates in the year 1954 will be transformed and made part of a huge real estate project in the works for the City of Lausanne. This was announced by the Mayor of Lausanne Grégoire Junod recently.

The Stade Olympique de la Pontaise is a multipurpose stadium in Lausanne, Switzerland. The stadium holds 15,700 people and opened in the year 1954. The stadium is used primarily to hold football matches.

‘bluewin.ch’ further quoted Mayor Junod as stating that the three architectural firms commissioned by the City “have pointed out that we could find the necessary built volume of the order of 115,000 square metres, or 80 to 90 million in land values, by densifying the area around the stadium”.

While the above venue will be retained plans have been drawn up to build 3,000 to 35,000 apartments near the facility.

Added Mayor Junod, “The City-owned Stade Olympique de la Pontaise could be made into a multipurpose venue and the pitch could also be made available to the public. It is also being planned to expand the stadium.”

Mayor Junod further informed that work on the above venue would begin only after the makeover work of the 12,000-capacity Pierre de Coubertin Stadium in Lausanne, Switzerland, is completed as the arena will be holding the 50th edition of Athletissima on August 20^th, 2025.

The Athletissima is an annual track and field event held in Lausanne, Switzerland, that showcases the world’s top athletic talent.

Concluded Mayor Junod, “Considering the ongoing revamp work of the Pierre de Coubertin Stadium we have decided to start the total redevelopment work of the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in the year 2028 or 2029. The private investors would provide the capital injection and the City would pick up the tab of building the public facilities.”
