New arena in Hamburg scoring big on sustainability

Hamburg’s recent bid for the Olympic Games relied on a thoroughly climate-conscious concept involving venues already built or earmarked for long-term use, short distances and many other features. Even though the citizens eventually decided against the bid moving forward, the city’s commitment remains: Events – both in sports and culture – can be aligned with sustainable goals, providing operators, performers and spectators alike with a new kind of experience. This is what landmarks like the “Green Bunker” adjacent to the St. Pauli stadium have recently already delivered – and it is precisely the ambition behind the city’s new call for tender for a multifunctional arena seating 8,000 – 10,000, too.

The location in the Neuer Huckepackbahnhof district is well served by public transport: Commuter trains, a subway line and buses run nearby. A new green corridor for pedestrians and cyclists will connect the area with Binnenalster, Hamburg’s central lake, and the majestic river Elbe. The ‘Alster-Bille-Elbe Green Corridor’ will create recreational and leisure areas that can also be used for sporting activities and events in the immediate vicinity of the arena.

Of course, the future venue, which will fill Hamburg’s need for medium-sized concerts and matches, can be conveniently reached by car as well. The parking will be organized efficiently in order to serve the whole district and it’s up to 3,000 work force. Another key element of the tender therefore is the construction and operation of a central neighbourhood car park. With approximately 1,000 parking spaces, it is designed to accommodate overall traffic demand in the area.

The construction project is to be certified by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) with the DGNB Special Environmental Label. The certification focuses on minimizing CO₂ emissions during the construction and operation, maximising the use of renewable energy sources, and addressing a wide range of additional sustainability criteria. In addition, there are requirements regarding accessible building use.

Billebogen Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, a group company of the municipal HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, is developing the site’s transport links and ensuring connections to water, energy and communications networks. As the owner of the site, it is guiding interested developers and users through the application process.
