The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team Kansas City Current (US) officially has a name for its brand-new riverfront stadium.

‘kmbc.com’ stated that the first stadium built solely for a women’s professional sports team will now officially be called the CPKC Stadium.

The Kansas City Current is an American professional women’s soccer team playing in Kansas City, Kansas (US). It was founded as an expansion team in the National Women’s Soccer League in 2021.

The 11,500-capacity CPKC Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium being built in Kansas City, Missouri (US) for the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), who currently plays home games at the Children’s Mercy Park. The stadium is scheduled to be completed and opened by March 2024.

The 18,467-capacity Children’s Mercy Park is a soccer-specific stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, United States, and serves as the home pitch of the National Women’s Soccer League club Kansas City Current. The stadium is located near Kansas Speedway, on the far West side of the Wyandotte County, Kansas.

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is a professional women’s soccer league at the top of the United States league system. Headquartered in New York City, it is owned by the teams and, until 2020, was under a management contract with the United States Soccer Federation.

Chicago (US)-based the United States Soccer Federation, commonly referred to as U.S. Soccer, is a 501 nonprofit organization and the official governing body of the sport of soccer in the United States.

‘kmbc.com’ further stated that at a presser held recently, the club unveiled a 10-year naming rights agreement with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited.

The Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (CPKC) is a Class I railroad in North America. It was formed on April 14th, 2023, when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS) merged. The CPKC operates a single-line transnational railway that connects Canada, the United States and Mexico. It transports automotive, energy, chemicals, plastics, forestry, industrial, and temperature protected products.

The CPKC is the first and only single-line railway connecting Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The railway, which has its US corporate headquarters in Kansas City, was created by combining two historic railways – the Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern.

The team released new renderings of what the stadium will look like with the CPKC branding once the venue is complete.

The club owners Angie and Chris Long said in the announcement, “As we embarked on finding the perfect naming rights partner, it was always about finding an organization where our values and vision align. CPKC is that partner.”

Keith Creel, the President and head honcho of CPKC, echoed the owners’ excitement, “We are incredibly proud to sponsor the Kansas City Current and support this history-making project here in the City that is at the heart of our North American rail network.”

In addition to the naming rights, the outdoor gathering space at the entrance to the stadium will be called the CPKC Plaza. The area will become the permanent home of the KC Current team store.

The CPKC will also join the Current’s community initiatives as part of the partnership. In 2023, the railway is helping to renovate the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Lab at the East High School, just four miles from the new stadium.

Recently, the Current announced the first of several local restaurant tie-ins planned for the stadium’s concessions.

While that announcement may not have been historic, it certainly was delicious.

The stadium is on track to open ahead of the 2024 KC Current season. As the team continues to set new attendance records, the excited fans are beginning to snap up season tickets.

The team has a 50-year lease agreement with Port KC for the seven-acre site on the East end of the Berkley Riverfront Park in downtown Kansas City.

The CPKC stadium will seat 11,500 spectators. The team boasts that no seat will be more than 100 feet from the field.
