Kerala starts construction of new stadium Image: Kerala Cricket Association

The Finance Minister of Kerala (State in India) K.N. Balagopal launched the construction of a new cricket stadium in Ezhukone (village in Kerala) recently stating that it would make the town the cricket capital of Kollam district in Kerala.

The cricket stadium launch will serve as a fillip to build more sport facilities across Kerala.

THE HINDU businessline’ stated that the project, led by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), is the first stadium in the State to be approved under India’s Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Green Building rating system, according to an official release.

Thiruvananthapuram (India)-based the Kerala Cricket Association is the governing body of the game of cricket in Kerala, India. It is affiliated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and governs the Kerala cricket team as well as the Kerala Cricket League (a franchise-based professional T20 cricket tournament).

Its headquarters are situated at the Cricket Centre in the 33,100-capacity Wankhede Stadium in Churchgate, Mumbai. The BCCI is the wealthiest governing body of cricket in the world. It has revenue of more than 5,300 crore.

‘THE HINDU businessline’ further stated that the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) is an independent, not-for-profit society jointly set up by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, to promote and administer Green Buildings in India.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is a research institute in New Delhi (India) that specializes in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development.Established in 1974 it was formerly known as the Tata Energy Research Institute.

The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹56 crore with the first phase of construction –costing ₹21 crore – expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The stadium will be built on 10 acres of land owned by the association.

The KCA President Jayesh George said the stadium is part of a broader plan to enhance sports facilities across Kerala.

Balagopal emphasized that improvement in the local transportation infrastructure, including the upcoming Ilanjikode Bridge, will enhance access to the stadium and benefit the region at large.
