Dutch Eerste Divisie club SC Cambuur has opened its new 15,000 seat Kooi Stadium.

The new Kooi Stadium has been built opposite the World Trade Center and the Elfstedenhal in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden.

The building houses a stadium for SC Cambuur, a school for the education management company ROC Friese Poort as well as commercial spaces.

SC Cambuur warned, however, the new stadium is still far from finished and numerous temporary measures have been taken to ensure that football can be played there at all.

Strict agreements have also been made about this with the authorities and the permit to be allowed to play is directly related to this.

SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden, also known as SC Cambuur, or simply Cambuur, is a Dutch football club from the City of Leeuwarden (Netherlands) formed on June 19th, 1964.

They currently play in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football, following relegation from the Eredivisie in the 2022–23 season. The home ground of the club is the 15,000-capacity Kooi Stadion, which opened in 2024.

SC Cambuur said that the most important starting point in the creation of the new Kooi Stadium was that it should not be a standard stadium, but a real football stadium that does justice to the history and experience of the Leeuwarden people’s club.

To guarantee this, a stadium advisory committee was set up, consisting of 20 supporters and sponsors from all walks of life, whose most important task was to make it a ‘new home’.

With four separate, steep stands that extend to the edge of the field, high floodlights that can be seen from the city centre and a large Supporters Home where everyone can go before, during half-time and after the match, this has been achieved.

The new Kooi Stadium will be the most sustainable stadium in the Netherlands.

With practical solutions such as collecting rainwater, solar panels on the roof, no gas connections and waste processing, the new stadium is a shining example for other clubs and households in general.
