Malmö Stadion makeover as ‘Green district’

The former home ground of the top-flight Swedish club Malmö FF – Malmö Stadion – will be transformed into an ‘open and Green district’ for sports and education in the center of the Swedish City Malmö.

The Malmö Stadion served as the home of Malmö FF from when it opened for Sweden’s staging of the 1958 FIFA World Cup™ through to when the club moved into the new Eleda Stadium in 2009.

The ‘City of Malmö’ stated that the development of the stadium area is driven by the City of Malmö and will be implemented in stages. The first stage with the expansion of Annebergsskolan (school in Malmö, Sweden) and the Malmö sports primary school as well as the stadium’s sports hall has been completed. The ongoing stage involves the development of the Sports Quarter, the Northern part of the stadium area, which will come armed with a new multipurpose hall, offices, concept housing, park, mobility building, and public square.

The Malmö FF is a professional football club and the most successful football club in Sweden in terms of trophies won. Formed in 1910 and affiliated with the Scania Football Association, Malmö FF is based at Eleda Stadium in Malmö, Scania.

The 22,500-capacity Stadion, currently known as Eleda Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in Malmö, Sweden, and is the home of Malmö FF.

The 26,500-capacity Malmö Stadion, often known simply as Stadion before the construction of the new Stadion between 2007 and 2009, is a multipurpose stadium in Malmö, Sweden. As of 2015, it is the home of association football club IFK Malmö, presently of Division 2, and athletics club MAI. The stadium served as the home ground for Malmö FF, an association football team in Sweden’s top flight, Allsvenskan, from its opening in 1958 until 2009, when the club moved to the newly constructed Stadion, built beside Malmö Stadion, in 2009.

The ‘City of Malmö’ further stated that on March 31st, 2022, the City Council approved a proposal for the implementation and financing of the Sports Quarter in the Northern part of the stadium area. Work will soon begin on a detailed plan and land allocation procedure.

The new sports neighborhood will come up right in the heart of Malmö and will be connected to Pildammsparken (park in Malmö, Sweden). The area will stretch between John Ericsson’s Road and Malmö Stadium in the North part of the stadium area. The sports district in Malmö will invest heavily in sports, education, events, and will place topmost priority to the sustainability quotient.

The sports neighborhood will hugely benefit the Malmö residents. A multifunctional hall will come up which will act as an indoor facility for football with focus on school activities, association activities and events. The multifunctional halls will also comprise offices and meeting rooms.

The future design and development of the stadium area has been deliberated for a long time within the City of Malmö. In the plan program adopted by the City Council in 2019, there is a timetable for the full redevelopment of the area by 2030. The proposal is based on Malmö Stadion being demolished in the future, according to a decision arrived at by the Municipal Board in 2015.

In December 2020, the City Council commissioned the Municipal Board to come up with a proposal – in consultation with the relevant committees – for financing and implementation of Stage Two, the ‘Sports Quarter’, in the Northern part of the stadium area.

The City Council recently approved a proposal for the implementation and financing of the Sports Quarter, adding that work will soon begin on a detailed plan and land allocation procedure.

In two years’ time, the process to demolish the Northern grandstand of Malmö Stadion will begin and in its place will come up a sports hall in the area’s second construction phase. After that, the Southern part is intended to be pulled down.

Sports Quarter

The Sports Quarter will serve as a hub for offices and businesses with focus on sports and health. The development will also generate jobs for the local people of Malmö (City in Sweden). The Southeastern part of the Sports Quarter will boast an Activity Square where different kinds of sporting events will be held.

Activity Square

The residents of Malmö – irrespective of age – will get access to the Activity Square. The Activity Square will also boast a mobility house (for people who have difficulty in walking but are not necessarily chairbound) and will also enjoy spacious parking spaces.

A park with running trail will also be built and various recreational activities will be held there.
