Maradona Stadium to remain Napoli home

The Serie A club Napoli has reportedly agreed to a fresh five-year lease deal to continue playing at their present home ground – the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy.

‘IL MATTINO’ stated that the Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has arrived at an agreement with the Municipality of Naples, which owns the facility, to renew the lease deal.

The S.S.C. Napoli, commonly referred to as Napoli, is an Italian professional football club based in the City of Naples (Italy) that plays in Serie A, the top flight of Italian football. Napoli has won three Serie A titles, six Coppa Italia titles, two Supercoppa Italiana titles, and one Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Cup.

The 54,726-capacity Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo, is a stadium in the Western Fuorigrotta suburb of Naples, Italy. It is the fourth largest football stadium in Italy, after Milan’s 75,817-capacity San Siro Stadium, Rome’s 72,698-capacity Stadio Olimpico and Bari’s 58,270-capacity Stadio San Nicola. It serves as the digs of S.S.C. Napoli.

‘IL MATTINO’ further stated that Napoli’s lease deal to play at the above venue was all set to expire on June 30^th. With the new lease deal being struck, the agreement would run till June 2028. The earlier deal had the provision of renewing the lease deal by five years and the same has now been put into effect.

Last month, it was reported that the Municipality of Naples had put up the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for sale and that the City was looking out for potential investors who can pick up the tab of future restructuring of the facility.

It was also reported that Laurentiis could make an offer to buy the stadium with the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, stating that the Maradona Stadium needs “extensive restructuring”.

The Municipality of Naples approved the renaming of the stadium in honor of Diego Maradona after the death of the soccer legend in 2020. Maradona was instrumental in Napoli bagging two Serie A titles from 1984 to 1991.

Last season saw Napoli win Serie A for the first time since Maradona’s stint at the club.
