Germany return of fans postponed Image: Borussia Dortmund

The hope was great, the disappointment is all the greater!

The ‘Sport BILD’ stated that the MPK has postponed the return of fans to the Bundesliga games in Germany as the Omicron wave is on in the country.

A statement sent out stated, “The Federal and State Governments will take a decision on opening up stadia for fans only when the load becomes less on hospitals and the health system is no longer overwhelmed.”

Crying foul

Fumed the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund (BVB) boss Hans-Joachim Watzke, “Almost three- quarters of people in Germany have been vaccinated. The vaccination drive has been very aggressive in this country. We have sometimes allowed 90 percent spectators for indoor games in venues and 750 fans for outdoor games despite the Omicron situation. Not allowing fans in arenas is simply ridiculous. I just fail to understand the logic behind this.”

The ‘Sport BILD’ quoted him as further stating, “There was always this contention that football was given priority over other sports. In fact, it is just the opposite. The game of football has fallen victim to dirty politics. It is pathetic that the MPK thinks that banning fans from facilities is the most right thing to do instead of arriving at a logical decision. We will revisit the decisions taken by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and may even take legal recourse.”

The Borussia Dortmund, BVB, or simply Dortmund, is a German professional sports club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which plays in Bundesliga, the top of the German football league system. The 81,365-capacity Signal Iduna Park serves as their residence.
