Sports Minister Jakub Rutnicki announced recently at an event held at the National Stadium that the Government is beginning work on Poland’s bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2040 or 2044. The project will be based on the ‘Polish Sports Development Strategy 2040’ which, as announced, will become the foundation for a multiyear preparation process.

‘nowawarszawa.pl’ stated that Rutnicki emphasized that the Games are not an end in themselves but are intended to be the “culmination of a broad change” that will result in increased sporting activity in Poland.

The minister stated, “The Games in Poland are possible but they must be a joint project transcending political divisions and accepted by the entire sports and political community.”

‘nowawarszawa.pl’ further stated that Warsaw is to be the project leader. The Mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski said the capital’s candidacy is “a huge opportunity and a civilizational project with significant symbolic significance”.

He pointed out that 2044, one of the possible Olympic dates, coincides with the centenary of the Warsaw Uprising – “One hundred years after the glow of fires over the destroyed City we would light a candle for a safe and strong Europe.”

Trzaskowski noted that bidding for the Olympics could accelerate key investments including the construction of the fourth Metro line. He emphasized that cooperation with the Government is necessary to build top-tier sports arenas.

The other Cities are also expected to be involved in the project. Deputy Minister of Sport Piotr Borys announced that following the example of the 2024 Paris Olympics a group of co-hosts is planned, including large regional centers such as Gdańsk, Poznań, Rzeszów, Wrocław, and Kraków. These Cities will be able to organize some of the competitions and prepare accommodation centers for the athletes.

Maja Włoszczowska, a two-time Olympic runner-up and member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, also expressed support for the bid. She believes Poland is ready to compete to host the Games but the process will be multiyear and will require the full involvement of the Government, the local Governments and the private sector. She emphasized that the most important element should be the “social legacy” that is, rekindling the desire for sport among the Poles. “The Games are meant to be the icing on the cake of a broad national project,” she said.

Work on the Government’s sports development strategy is scheduled for completion in June 2026 and talks with the International Olympic Committee are scheduled to begin next year. Other countries bidding to host the 2040-2044 Olympics include Germany, India, Qatar, and Egypt.
