Next stage of River Plate stadium renovation Image: Buenos Aires Turismo

The Argentine professional sports club River Plate is on cloud nine as Marcello Gallardo will not only continue as their Manager but Gallardo has also started giving shape to their restructured home in Núñez, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The ‘oicanadian’ stated that the club’s President, Jorge Brito, recently revealed details as regards the second stage remodeling of River Plate’s residence – Estadio ‘Monumental’ Antonio Vespucio Liberti. In a presser held in this regard, the President gave an update on the Antonio Vespucio Liberti refurbishment work.

Club Atlético River Plate, commonly known as River Plate, is an Argentine professional sports club based in the Núñez neighborhood of Buenos Aires (Argentina), and was founded on May 25th, 1901, and named after the English name for the City’s estuary, Río de la Plata. Although many sports are practiced at the club, River Plate is best known for its professional football team, which has won Argentina’s Primera División championship a record 36 times.

The 72,054-capacity Estadio ‘Monumental’ Antonio Vespucio Liberti, also referred to as River Plate Stadium, Monumental de Nuñez, or simply El Monumental, is a stadium in Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina, home of the football club River Plate.

The ‘oicanadian’ further stated that the main objective of the stadium repurposing work is to expand the capacity of the stadium and lend it a futuristic look.

In the first stage of the revamp work, a new pitch was installed with hybrid technology that allows the ball to move faster and quickly removes excess water. In the presser, it was informed that the second stage remodeling work will start which includes the construction of the stands – San Martín and Belgrano side stalls. The main objective is to expand the capacity of the stadium from 72,000 to circa 81,000. The stands will be kept 12 meters apart from each other and some 60,000 stalls will be set up. Moreover, a single tunnel will be built and both the home team and the away team will use the same tunnel to come out to the pitch.

Though the fans had made a fervent plea to replace the wooden seats dating back to the ’80s with folding chairs, but the same cannot be done now due to fiscal issues.

A restaurant is also being planned to be built overlooking the Barrio River, as well as three floors of parking (which will increase parking capacity to 1,300).

The second phase of spruce-up work will begin immediately. However, as work will be carried out in phases, ‘The Millionaires’ do not have to shift to another venue as they did in the first phase of the reconfiguration work when they played a good part of their matchups in the year 2020 at the Libertadores de América de Independiente Stadium.

Naming rights

An international supermarket chain is likely to lend its name to the spruced-up River Bank Stadium and the Antonio Vespucio Liberti will be bearing part of the sponsor’s name. The supermarket chain ChangoMore, led by Francisco De Narvaez, will likely give its name to the facility. The word ‘More’ will be included in the new name of the stadium. An oil company and a multinational firm have also offered to lend their naming rights to the stadium. However, nothing concrete has emerged as yet as to with which entity the club would strike the naming rights deal finally.
