To prepare for Paris 2024 and to facilitate upgrade and preparatory work to be carried out at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, the venue will be unavailable for use from the beginning of next year. Paris (France) is getting all dolled up to host the biggest sporting show on the planet from July-August 2024.

‘rmcsport.bfmtv.com’ stated that no sporting events or concerts will take place at the above venue starting January 2024 leading to the Six Nations Championship (an annual international men’s rugby union competition between the teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales), and the Coupe de France (premier knockout cup competition in French football) being hugely impacted.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and commonly known as Paris 2024, is an upcoming international multisport event that is scheduled to take place from July 26th to August 11th, 2024 with Paris as its main Host City and 16 Cities spread across Metropolitan France and one in Tahiti – an island within the French overseas country and overseas collectivity of French Polynesia – as a subsite. The Paralympic Games will be held in Paris from August 28th to September 8th.

The Stade de France is the national stadium of France, located just North of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis. Its seating capacity of 80,698 makes it the sixth-largest stadium in Europe. The stadium is used by the France national football team and the France rugby union team for international competition.

‘rmcsport.bfmtv.com’ further stated that majorly work will be carried out in the above venue on the athletics track.

And for the first time in the history of the Stade de France, the Six Nations Championship – the annual rugby union tournament usually beginning in February – will not be held in the facility. Marseille is likely to step in as an alternative host for one of the matches, having previously staged a Six Nations match against Italy in 2018.

The 2023-2024 Top 14 final in domestic rugby union has already been moved from the Stade de France to Marseille’s (City in France) 67,000-capacity Stade Vélodrome.

‘inside the games’ stated that the Stade Vélodrome was renovated for the 2016 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Championship, and is a venue for the men’s Rugby World Cup in France later this year and football matches at Paris 2024.

The 59,186-capacity Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Décines-Charpieu, France, is another reported potential host venue for matches.

‘inside the games’ further stated that a compensation package for the French Rugby Federation (FFR) of approximately €9 million (£7.9 million/$9.6 million) at around €3 million (£2.7 million/$3.2 million) per match needs to be agreed.

The French Football Federation (FFF) is also expected to be affected, requiring a stadium for the international window from March 18th-26th, 2024 and the Coupe de France final on May 25th later in 2024.

The Stade de France was built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup™ in which the final was held.
