Yankee Stadium opens as vaccination site Image: Yankee Stadium

As COVID-19 continues its ‘Dance of Death’ in the United States, stadia across the country are getting on the bandwagon of serving as vaccination centers. The pandemic has made mincemeat of the sports venue sector and its sporting calendar has gone for a toss. Nevertheless, they are trying to do their best in the fight against the dreaded disease.

Yankee Stadium (US) opened as a COVID-19 mass vaccination site recently with officials trying to boost inoculation rates in surrounding Bronx neighborhoods in New York which has taken a severe beating due to the pandemic.

The 54,251-capacity Yankee Stadium is a baseball park located in Concourse, Bronx, New York City (US). It is the home field for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB) and New York City FC of Major League Soccer (MLS), as well as being the host stadium for the annual Pinstripe Bowl game.

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League East division.

The New York City Football Club is an American professional soccer club based in New York City that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), the highest level of American soccer, as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference.

New York Yankees sources stated that their digs are being restricted to residents of the New York City borough with the highest percentage of positive coronavirus test results. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called it “a different kind of opening day” hours after a long line formed outside the stadium on a damp morning.

Speaking at a stadium-side news conference, the Mayor stated, “This is about protecting people who need the most protection because the Bronx is one of the places that bore the brunt of this crisis of the coronavirus. The Bronx has suffered.”

De Blasio, a Red Sox fan, donned a Yankees cap in gratitude to the team and declared himself a fan of Boston’s arch rival “for one day only”.

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts (US). They compete in MLB as a member club of the American League East division. The team have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 14.

New York Yankees sources further informed that the site established with help from the City and State has registered about 13,000 of the 15,000 appointments available in its first week (read from February 5th, 2021), officials said. It will initially be open seven days a week, 8 am to 8 pm. Officials encouraging people to get vaccinated enlisted former Yankees star relief pitcher Mariano Rivera to help. The Hall of Famer evinced keen interest in supporting the people who supported him for so many years.

Asserted Rivera, “We saved so many games here. But now it’s about saving lives.”

Mariano Rivera is a Panamanian-American former professional baseball pitcher who played 19 seasons in MLB for the New York Yankees, from 1995 to 2013.
